WASHINGTON -
American University improved to 6-1-1 on the season, the team's best start in school history, after defeating Georgetown University (3-4-0), Tuesday on Reeves Field.
AU sophomore Meg Runeari (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead at the 34 minute mark, when she beat Georgetown goaltender Jade Higgins on the right side of the net off of a direct kick from 20 yards out. The Eagles went into halftime up by a score of 1-0, despite being out-shot 7-5 in the first frame.
American was not content with its' 1-0 lead to start the second half and they poured on the offensive pressure. Sophomore Jana Lee (New Providence, N.J./Summit) scored her third goal in as many games when freshman Annette Scott (Gresham, Ore./Centennial) served up a great shot that Lee headed into the top right corner of the Hoya net. Scott's assist on the play in the 52nd minute was the first of her college career. Marcela Ricupero (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Academia Cotopaxi) extended the AU lead to 3-0 when she took a pass from Runeari, faked out the Georgetown defender and beat Higgins on the right side of the goal.
Georgetown would increase their offensive pressure in the last 20 minutes of regulation, scoring a goal at the 84:01 mark but the AU defenders shot-down the Hoyas' attempt to comeback. Eagle goaltender Alison Doyle (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Catholic) made seven saves in net for American, one day after being named as the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week. AU was outshot by Georgetown 13-9.
AU's women's soccer team is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 25 when they travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on Holy Cross in their conference opener. The Eagles and Crusaders are set to start at 1:00 p.m.
