ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- American University outshot Navy 24-9, but ultimately could not put the ball in the net, as Navy upset the Eagles by a goal, 1-0. American had one final shot at tying things up, but Nigel White's (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) shot was just wide at 3:55.
Salvatore Caccavale (West Islip, N.Y.) led American offensively with eight shots, including one on goal with less than nine minutes remaining. John Fico (Jupiter, Fla./Cardinal Newman) managed three shots, with two on goal. Sophomore Freddy Llerena (Germantown, Md./Northwest) took two shots on goal.
GoalkeeperThomas Myers (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) picked up three saves and made one particularly tough save at 5:15 to keep AU within a goal.
Navy came close to scoring 45 seconds into the game, and eventually scored the first and only goal of the game at the 20:00 mark when Doug Kurz grabbed a pass from Ryan Peters and scored from the far right side of the field.
American not only had the edge in shots (24-9), but corner kicks as well (11-0). Navy committed five more fouls (14-9) and had the only two yellow cards in the game.
Navy's Aric McElheny made five saves in 78 minutes and Frank DiFilippo finished the game in the nets with one save.
American will next host Lehigh on Saturday, October 4 at 1 p.m.
