NORFOLK, Va. -- American University put together a tremendous effort against William and Mary and came away with a 4-1 victory. Peter Philipakos (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove/St. John's) led the way with two goals and an assist as he helped the Eagles finish second in the 28th annual Stihl Soccer Classic.

Philipakos and teammates Charlie Koniver (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and Salvatore Caccavale (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) were all named to the All-Tournament team. ODU led the way with four players named to the team.

AU scored two goals less than four minutes into the game to take control early. The first goal of the game came when Brett Niebling (Irvine, Calif./Woolridge) took a pass from Shawn Kuykendall (Fairfax, Va./Madison) and flicked it to Caccavale, who slammed it in at 2:21 for the first goal of the game. Less than a minute later (3:02) Philipakos took another Kuykendall pass and scored. Philipakos then headed in a pass from Nathan Baker (Bowie, Md./St. John's College H.S.) into the goal in the 41st minute, to send the Eagles into the half with a 3-0 lead.

"We played like a desperate team today," said American University head coach Todd West. "If we can continue to play desperate, we can have a pretty good season."

William and Mary scored on a penalty kick midway in the second half (60:37), but Baker got the goal back just two minutes later. Caccavale and Philipakos assisted on Baker's goal.

The Eagles were whistled for 19 fouls to just five for the Tribe, and AU was also outshot 15-10. Three yellow cards were issued on the afternoon, with AU picking up two of them.

Thomas Myers (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) played another standout game. He faced 15 shots and made a pair of outstanding saves. American is now 2-3-1 on the year.

American will next play at George Mason on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 7:00 p.m.
