NORFOLK, Va. -- American University played host school Old Dominion (Old Dominion/Stihl Classic) to a draw for nearly 85 minutes before a free kick allowed the Monarchs to score the only goal of the game. The goal gave ODU a 1-0 victory, however, junior Charlie Koniver (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) nearly tied things up with three minutes to play, but ODU's Samuel Cameron made an outstanding stop. Cameron has yet to allow a goal this season.
American had played controlled in the first half and after the first 45 minutes each team had taken six shots. The Eagles best scoring opportunity came when Peter Philipakos (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove/St. John's) broke free and hit the post.
In the second half rain began to dominate the play. It created several interesting chances for both teams, but in particular for AU's. David Marut (Winchester, Va./John Handley/Old Dominion). Marut had a shot to score the first goal of the game when he beat his man and bore down on Cameron at the 70 minute mark, but his shot was just off.
The two teams finished the game with 12 shots apiece and AU committed 10 fouls to seven for ODU. Each team was issued a yellow card and ODU was whistled for offsides nine times while the Eagles were not called for any. Thomas Myers (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) made four saves in goal for the Eagles while Cameron had four. ODU is nationally-ranked and now 4-0-0 while AU is 1-3-1.
American will next play William and Mary on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 12:00 p.m. in the last day of the ODU Stihl Soccer Classic.
