WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) - Brian Wilson hit a 3-point field goal with 26 seconds to play on Friday night to give Holy Cross a 68-66 win over American.
Wilson, who led the Crusaders with 24 points, gave Holy Cross the win after Steven Miles and Glenn Stokes of American each hit 3-pointers in the final two minutes.
The victory kept Holy Cross (20-4, 10-1 PL) in first place in the PL standings. The two-time defending PL champion Crusaders have a two-game lead over second-place Lehigh with three games remaining in the regular-season. American (12-12, 7-4 PL) falls out of a second-place tie with LU into third place.
Miles' 3-pointer tied the game 63-63 with 2:07 left and Stokes' 3-pointer gave the Eagles a 66-65 lead with 42 seconds left.
Jave Meade had 14 points and Patrick Whearty added 11 points and 10 rebounds for Holy Cross (20-4, 10-1 Patriot). Stokes had 19 points and Miles added 15 for American (12-12, 7-4).
The Eagles, who shot 57 percent from the floor in the first half, took the early lead on the shooting of Miles and Ricardas Patiejunas, who each had three 3-point field goals, and led 40-31 at halftime.
After Miles' 3-pointer gave American a 43-33 lead with 17:55 left in the game, Wilson scored five points and Meade hit a 3-pointer as Holy Cross took a 49-47 lead with 12:56 left, the Crusaders' first since the opening minutes. However, Stokes converted a pair of field goals as American took a 54-50 lead with 10:40 left.
Wilson scored a 3-pointer and Meade added three points as Holy Cross pulled ahead 68-62.
Matej Cresnik's 3-point try at the buzzer bounced off the rim.
