WASHINGTON -- American University got the better of the play against the Mountain Hawks of Lehigh, but could not find the back of the net, as it eventually lost by the score of 2-0. The Eagles outshot Lehigh 15-7 for the game, and in in the second half held a 12-4 advantage. However, key saves by Lehigh's Sam Bishop and a couple of wide shots sealed the Eagles fate.

Lehigh scored the first goal of the game at 11:52 when Ben Gucciardi fed Kyle Hansen on the far right side of the field. Hansen collected it in stride, and hit a shot that AU goalkeeper Thomas Myers (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) had no play on. Myers finished the day with one save and faced seven shots.

After Lehigh had taken the lead the Eagles began to dominate play, keeping the ball in the Mountain Hawk territory. Peter Philapakos (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove/St. John's) led AU's offensive efforts with six shots total, with two of those on goal. Salvatore Caccavale (West Islip, N.Y.) took three shots, with two of them on goal, while Shawn Kuykendall (Fairfax, Va./Madison) took two shots, and came very close to tying things up, only to see his shot go wide.

John Fico (Jupiter, Fla./Cardinal Newman) entered the game and seemed to provide a spark, but his shot on goal was grabbed up by Bishop. Bishop finished with six saves.

In addition to the advantage in shots, the Eagles also held the edge in corner kicks (7-3). Fouls were almost even, with Lehigh leading by one (8-7).

American will hit the road for their next game, as they travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on Holy Cross. The game is Saturday, October 11 at 3 p.m.
