GERMANTOWN, Md. - American University fell behind early, but came back strong, scoring the last three goals of the game to come away with a 3-1 victory over Loyola. The Eagles are now 6-71 overall. Shawn Kuykendall (Fairfax, Va./Madison) scored off of a penalty kick at 30:16 to give AU a 2-1 lead, which proved to be the difference. Kuykendall had a penalty shot earlier in the game, but Loyola's Dan Mulcahy came away with a spectacular stop to deny Kuykendall. Kuykendall finished the evening with five shots, two on goal and one score. With AU trailing by a goal, Peter Philipakos (Glen Cove, N.Y./Glen Cove/St. John's) took advantage of a bobbled save, and headed the ball into the net past a diving Mulcahy. Philipakos took three shots on the night, and assisted on the Eagles last goal of the evening. Salvatore Caccavale (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), who just won the Patriot League Player of the Week award, scored at 66:05 when Philipakos found him on the far right side of the field. In addition to his goal, Caccavale finished with three shots, two of which were on goal. For the game Andrew Herman (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) took four shots, with three of them being on goal. The Eagles dominated the game statistically. They outshot the Greyhounds 19-7, and had a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. The first 45 minutes is when AU did most of its damage. They had a 11-3 advantage in shooting and 4-0 lead in corner kicks. Thomas Myers (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) was once again very solid in the net for American. He notched four saves and faced seven shots. He left the game at 84:15 to let Jeff Rosenthal (Dallas, Tx./Bradenton Academy) see some action, the first time he has played all year, Loyola's Mulcahy faced 19 shots and collected nine saves. Tonight's game was played at the Germantown Soccerplex, but it was considered a home game for Loyola. American will return to Patriot League action this weekend when they play at Bucknell on October 26 at 1 p.m.
