WASHINGTON -- American University's Shawn Kuykendall (Fairfax, Va./Madison) took advantage of a penalty kick to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead at 42:32. Kuykendall was to the right of the box, and buried the shot low and just inside the right post. American is now 4-7-1 overall.
There was not a lot of action in the first 45 minutes, but American held an edge in shots (7-3) and corners (3-0). However, AU was in the Princeton end for much of the half. Princeton goalie Erik White made four saves in the half to keep things close.
The second half seemed to be a continuation of the first half for the first 15 minutes. However, Princeton's Gianfranco Tripicchi picked up a yellow card at 61:08 and just a minute later the Eagles exploded for the second goal of the game. Brett Niebling Irvine, Calif./Wooodridge) sent a long pass down for a streaking Andrew Herman (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside). Herman gathered in the pass and blew past the Tiger defender, before firing it past the goalie at 62:27.
American struck again less than four minutes later when Salvatore Caccavale (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) led David Marut (Winchester, Va./John Handley/Old Dominion) perfectly. Marut collected the ball in stride, beat his defender, and then the goalie to the right.
For the game the Eagles outshot Princeton 14-3, and dominated the second 45 minutes. Corner kicks were in favor of AU 5-0, and fouls were a draw at 11 apiece.
Thomas Myers (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) finished with one save and faced three shots, while Princeton's two goalies finished with eight saves on 14 shots.
American will host Colgate on October 18 at 1p.m.
