WORCESTER, Mass. -- American University's Shawn Kuykendall (Fairfax, Va./Madison) gave the Eagles the lead at 73:46 when he scored off of a free kick, but Holy Cross scored the last two goals of the game to come away with a 2-1 victory. American is now 3-7-1 overall and 0-3-0 in Patriot League play.
American got the better of the play in the first 45 minutes. They outshot the Crusaders 9-2, and hit the post three times. Aside from the post shots, Holy Cross goalie Richard Whipple had to leap to make the first save, and dove to make the second save.
For the game Kuykendall finished with three shots, while Brett Niebling (Irvine, Calif./Woodridge) also had three shots on goal. Kuykendall's lone goal was tremendous, as it came off of a free kick. The shot bent around the wall of Holy Cross players, and went into the upper portion of the net. Salvatore Caccavale (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) had two shots on goal.
The Crusaders tied things up at one apiece after AU's goalkeeper misplayed a back pass at 76:23. Holy Cross scored the gamewinner at 88:14 after Josh Trott got into the American box and beat Thomas Myers (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep). Myers finished with two saves and faced five shots.AU hit the post for the fourth time of the game in the second half.
American finished the game with a 15-5 advantage in shots and the two teams each had two corner kicks. Holy Cross had 15 fouls compared to 10 for AU.
American will host Princeton on October 15 at 3 p.m.
