American Hands Holy Cross First PL Men's Basketball Loss

WASHINGTON (AP)- Steven Miles and Glenn Stokes each scored 18 points to lead American to a 72-49 win over Holy Cross on Sunday, the Eagles' first victory over the Crusaders since joining the Patriot League last season.

The last time American (8-10, 3-2) and Holy Cross (14-4, 4-1) met was in last season's league championship game. Holy Cross won that game 58-54 to clinch a berth in the NCAA tournament.

While the stakes were lower Sunday, American used its three faster guards to attack the middle of the Crusaders' defense.

Andres Rodriguez had four points and 10 assists, most of them to Jernavis Draughn and Matej Cresnik, who finished with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Tim Szatko led the Crusaders with 11 points while senior center Patrick Whearty and junior guard Jave Meade each added 10 markers.

Holy Cross, which had won eight straight, led 11-4 early, but was outscored 23-7 over an 11-minute stretch in the first half. American, which led 31-26 at the break, went on a 27-8 during the first 10:13 of the second half to gain the victory.

The Eagles finished with a 38-28 advantage on the glass and held the Crusaders to 37.0% from the field (20-for-54). HC hit just 2-for-15 from three-point range.
