WASHINGTON - American University's men's soccer team was beaten by Old Dominion this afternoon on Reeves Field, 3-2 in overtime. Kyle Hartley scored for the Monarchs in the 94th minute to upset the No. 12 ranked Eagles.
Old Dominion (3-2) applied early pressure on the Eagles (5-2) as the ball was kept in the AU end for most of the first 10 minutes. Michael Behonick was forced to make two early saves for the Eagles. American's first opportunity came when a Monarch foul was called and AU was awarded a free kick in the 10th minute. Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week Shawn Kuykendall sent the ball into the box. Larry McDonald touched the ball once and Sean Albright headed it into the goal for the first score of the match.
American kept attacking the Monarchs in the 27th minute as Charlie Koniver sent a long ball ahead to Andrew Herman. Herman broke in alone, but his shot was saved by Old Dominion goalkeeper Samuel Cameron. Just one minute later, the Monarchs evened the score as a corner kick was sent into the box. The first shot by Kevon Harris was blocked, but Gianni Cimini shot a bicycle kick into the left corner of the goal to tie the match.
Old Dominion continued to pressure AU through the first half as Behonick made a huge kick save in the 36th minute on a shot by Michael Tooley. With just under five minutes remaining in the half, Harris fired a shot that Behonick punched into the air and Koniver was able to clear the dangerous ball away.
American was more aggressive against Old Dominion early in the second half. Kris Kuykendall centered the ball in the 54th minute to Peter Philipakos, but his shot went wide. Just seconds later, Shawn Kuykendall sent the ball in to Philipakos who passed the ball to Herman, but Herman's shot was high.
In the 67th minute, Herman sent the ball ahead to David Marut who broke in alone. With three defenders on his back, Marut shot, but it went just high. With the Eagle pressure building, AU was awarded a free kick from the corner in the 75th minute. Shawn Kuykendall sent the ball into the box and it bounced off of a number of players. Michael Grinsfelder sent the ball into the center of the net for his first goal of the season as the Eagles took a 2-1 lead.
The lead would not last though as Old Dominion was awarded a questionable penalty kick in the 81st minute. Attila Vendegh was able to convert to knot the game at two and force overtime.
AU had the first opportunity of overtime as Philipakos brought the ball down the left side, but his shot was wide of the net. In the 94th minute, ODU was on the attack and Vendegh fired a shot at Behonick that was deflected away by the Eagle keeper. Hartley gathered the rebound and sent the ball into the net to give the Monarchs the victory.
Behonick made 10 saves for the Eagles in the match while Cameron saved eight shots for Old Dominion. Offsides calls hurt AU as the squad drew 10 to Old Dominion's one.
American returns to action on Reeves Field on Saturday as the Eagles face Virginia Commonwealth at 1:00 p.m.
