WASHINGTON (AP) - Matej Cresnik and Glenn Stokes scored 14 points each as American held off Howard for a 61-58 win Monday night.
Stephen Miles had 10 points and Jernavis Draughn chipped in eight points for the host Eagles (3-3).
Kyle Williams led Howard (1-5) with 23 points. Louis Ford, whose desperation 3-pointer bounced off the rim at the buzzer, added a career-high 13 points while Mario Grove had 10 points along with a team-high nine rebounds.
Ron Williamson, who had 32 points Saturday against St. Francis, N.Y., was held scoreless until 6:17 to go in the game. He finished with just four points, ending a 21-game streak of scoring in double-figures.
The Eagles were outshot by Howard in the first half 40 percent to 33 percent but their pressure defense, which forced seven Howard turnovers in the first seven minutes of play, helped to produce a 26-21 lead into halftime.
American, however, found success from the 3-point arc, knocking down 11-of-27 shots for 40.7 percent. Both Stokes and Miles sank three 3-pointers for the Eagles. The Bison, in comparison, could not find the range, missing 13-of-16 attempts for 18.8 percent.
Howard outrebounded American 41-34 in the game.
