HAMILTON, N.Y. - Two goals scored by Andrew Herman off assists from Kris Kuyekndall help the American University men's soccer team defeat Colgate, 2-1 this evening in Hamilton, N.Y. With the win, AU is in the Patriot League Tournament to be held next weekend.
After a scoreless first half in which the Eagles had a number of chances, AU finally got on the board in the 48th minute as Kuykendall sent the ball ahead to Herman who was making a long run. After beating Colgate keeper Will Martin, Herman was able to easily put the ball in the back of the net and give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
The Raiders responded with a goal in the 69th minute as a free kick by Brian McDermott was headed home by Reed Grimes to knot the match at one.
AU quickly responded just five minutes later as Kuykendall brought the ball down into the box and drew Martin off of his line. He slipped the ball to Herman who buried the ball in the net for his Patriot League-leading 11th goal of the season. Kuykendall earned his seventh assist of the year on the play.
The AU back four of David Pryor, Charlie Koniver, Sean Albright and Robert Rezek was strong as Michael Behonick only had to make two saves in the match. Martin made 13 saves for Colgate.
AU's next match will be held in the first round of the Patriot League Tournament this Friday. The Eagles will play either Lehigh or Lafayette in the first round. Check back with AUEagles.com for a complete preview.
