BETHLEHEM, Pa. - American University's men's soccer team earned a hard-fought, 1-1 draw against the No. 14 Lehigh Mountain Hawks on a cold night in Bethlehem, Pa. AU played with only 10 men for 102 minutes of the match and came back from being down a goal in the second half to earn the tie. The Eagles move to 11-6-1 overall and 3-2-1 in Patriot League play.
The Eagles were put in a hole in the eighth minute as Larry McDonald was issued a red card for a foul he committed on Evan Bruno. On the ensuing free kick, Michael Behonick was able to save Bruno's shot that went towards the upper right corner of the goal.
In the 29th minute, Lehigh had another opportunity off of a corner kick that was headed on goal. However, Behonick was able to make the save for the Eagles. Even though AU was playing a man down, they began to put pressure on the Mountain Hawks in the first half.
The Eagles earned their first corner kick of the match in the 35th minute. After a couple of passes, Robert Rezek fired a shot on goal that was saved by a Lehigh defender standing just inside the left post. Off the ensuing rebound, Rezek took another shot the bent towards the right corner of the net but was saved by Lehigh goalkeeper Ryan Grzeszczak. Just five minutes later, Shawn Kuykendall had a free kick from just outside the arc that was saved by Grzeszcazk.
In the second half, Brandon Smith fired a hard shot on Behonick that was saved by the AU keeper. Lehigh took the lead in the 69th minute as a free kick by Kyle Hartman was headed into the goal by Dan Perciballi as the Mountain Hawks went up, 1-0.
Playing very aggressively despite being down a man, AU was able to strike back and tie the match. In the 76th minute, Kris Bertsch served the ball into the box to Kris Kuykendall who was able to head the ball into the left corner of the net for the equalizer.
AU had a chance to win the match in the 85th minute as Bertsch served another ball into the box from the right corner. Peter Philipakos was there, but his shot went just high and the teams went to overtime tied at one.
In the first overtime, neither team was able to get a shot off as most of the action was in the midfield. In the second extra frame, Lehigh outshot the Eagles 3-1, but Behonick was easily able to make two saves and preserve the tie for AU.
Behonick made eight saves in the match for American while Grzeszcak saved three shots. Lehigh outshot the Eagles 15-6 in the match, but AU was able to earn the draw.
AU's final match of the regular season is next Saturday at Colgate. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
