West Point, N.Y. - Freshman Simone Konig (Gartringen, Germany/ School of Economics in Boblingen) scored what turned out to be the the gamewinner at 57:03. The goal gave the American University women's soccer team its first-ever Patriot League Women's Soccer Championship. Konig took the shot from ten yards out after junior Anabel Jimenez (Kensington, Md./Bullis) beat a pair of defenders down the right sideline and passed her the ball. The Eagles are now 10-8-2 and will await the announcement of the NCAA pairings that will come out tomorrow. It is the first NCAA tournament appearance for the program.
The Konig goal was a reversal of the first AU score of the afternoon. Trailing by a goal, Jimenez headed the ball in after Konig put the ball in play from a corner kick. It was quite a weekend for the duo. Konig finished the two-game playoff with two goals and an assist while Jimenez netted two assists, one goal and walked off with the tournament MVP honors.
Jen Liese (Rushland, Pa./Council Rock) faced 13 shots and picked up two saves to earn her ninth win of the season. However, the save total didn't reflect her defensive contributions on the afternoon.
The Eagles will next play in the NCAA Tournament. Pairings will be announced on Monday at 4:30 p.m. AU began play in 1990 and officially started CAA play in 1993. This afternoon's title is the first in the 13-year history of women's soccer at AU.
