WASHINGTON - The No. 24 American University men's soccer team won on Senior Day at Reeves Field, 3-0, over Adelphi. AU used goals by senior Michael Grinsfelder and sophomores Andrew Herman and Shawn Kuykendall to defeat the Panthers. Michael Behonick posted his fourth shutout of the season, making seven saves and the Eagle defense notched its seventh shutout of the year. AU moves to 11-4-0 (3-1-0 Patriot League) on the season while Adelphi falls to 4-8-0 for the year.

The Eagles pressured Adelphi early in the match. Just ten minutes in, Shawn Kuykendall fed Peter Philipakos in the corner who crossed the ball to Herman, but his header went wide. AU got on the board in the 11th minute as an Adelphi foul gave AU a free kick just outside the box on the right side. Kuykendall took the kick and bent the ball into the upper left corner of the goal to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

American continued to put pressure on the Panthers in the first half. Grinsfelder and Philipakos worked the ball down the field together, yet Philipakos' shot went wide. American had 13 first half shots compared to only three for Adelphi. Adelphi's best chance in the match happened in the 35th minute when a Panther centering pass got past Behonick. Shawn Kuykendall got back and was able to clear the ball out of the goal and preserve the lead.

The Eagles continued to attack in the second half, earning a shot only 30 seconds in that was just high. In the 52nd minute, Kris Kuykendall fed Philipakos, but Philipakos' shot went over the net. After dominating the match, AU finally got its second goal in the 56th minute as Robert Rezek sent the ball to Kris Kuykendall who fed Herman. Herman made brought the ball in the box and put his shot into the lower right corner of the net for a 2-0 AU lead.

The Eagles added to the lead in the 69th minute. David Marut flicked the ball ahead to Kris Bertsch. Bertsch crossed the ball to Grinsfelder who fired the ball into the net for his second goal of the season and a 3-0 AU lead.

American outshot Adelphi, 25-12 in the match. The Panthers needed two defensive saves on shots by Freddy Llerena and Brett Niebling to keep the score at 3-0 as time wound down. Behonick had seven saves in his 12 shutout of his career while Igor Yatsenko saved eight shots for Adelphi. AU's back four consisted of all seniors as Rezek, Jeff KinneyLarry McDonald, and David Pryor helped shutdown the Adelphi attack.

This afternoon's match was the final regular season contest on Reeves Field for the eight AU seniors. Michael Behonick, Kris Bertsch, Michael Grinsfelder, Jeff Kinney, Kris Kuykendall, Larry McDonald, David Pryor and Robert Rezek all started in the Eagles' victory.

American returns to action on Tuesday as the Eagles travel to Army for a 7:00 p.m. Patriot League match.
