Washington - Georgetown scored twice in a ten minute span early in the first half and held on to to defeat American University 2-0 this afternoon at Reeves Field. AU had several scoring opportunities late in the second 45 minutes, but could not convert. Georgetown is now 9-6 and snapped a three-game losing streak while the Eagles go to 4-7-2.
Savannah Rennels (Rector, Pa/Latrobe Area/Bucknell) had four shots on goal and pushed the ball very aggressively, but was thwarted by solid goaltending. Anabel Jimenez (Kensington, Md./Bullis) also took four shots on goal but came away empty.
After winning Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honors last week for her performance versus Navy sophomore Jen Liese (Rushland, Pa./Council Rock) did not let up against Georgetown. She registered seven saves and kept AU in the game by shutting the Hoyas down for the last 67 minutes of action. Georgetown had 18 shots on goal and seven corner kicks.
Georgetown was led by Jen Choiniere who got the scoring going early in the first half. After a corner kick by Nicole Depalma bounced in front of the AU net, Lauren Calone gained control and passed it to Choiniere for the goal. Courtney Shaub scored the second goal of the day for the Hoyas after Beers-Altman headed the ball to her. Georgetown goalie Alexis George notched eight saves on the day.
American (4-7-2/1-1-1) will next host Patriot League foe Lehigh on October 20 at 2:30 p.m.
