Washington - Junior Savannah Rennels (Rector, Pa./Latrobe Area/Bucknell) took a feed from Simone Konig (Gartringen/School of Economics in Boblingen) and blasted it into the net to set up a 1-1 tie with Patriot League foe Navy. For Rennels, it was her 11th goal of the season, which is the sixth-best single season in AU history.
Konig also is climbing the Eagle record books. Her assist to Rennels was the seventh of the year for her, which ties her for first (Liz Pike - 1990) for assists in a season as a freshman. Konig had four shots on the day, including one very late in the second overtime that just missed. Rennels finished with three shots for the day.
In her first start in the nets in three weeks, due to injury, sophomore Jen Liese (Rushland, Pa./Council Rock) showed little rust as she registered 15 saves in 110 minutes. She saved her best for last, however, stopping a point-blank shot by Navy's Kara Hardebeck (Bellevue, Neb./Duchesne Academy) with 6:22 left in double overtime to help preserve the tie.
Navy was led by junior forward Amelia Sheveland (Farmers Branch, Tx./R.L. Turner), who scored her tenth goal of the year and the game's first off of an assist from Nadia Sheikh (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Pickerington). In goal Kim Bonafede notched 11 saves in 110 minutes of action.
American (4-6-2/1-1-1) will next host Georgetown on October 16 at 4:00 p.m.
