WASHINGTON - The No. 11 American University men's soccer team lost its second straight heartbreaking match today by a score of 3-2, falling to Holy Cross in double overtime. Chris Napolitano put in the rebound of his own penalty kick to give the Crusaders the victory in the 101st minute. AU was able to force overtime with a ferocious comeback, but could not pull out the victory in the extra stanzas.

The Eagles (10-4-0; 3-1-0) had one of the first opportunities of the match as Andrew Herman split two Crusader defenders and fired a shot on Holy Cross keeper Kevin Baker. Baker deflected the shot away and Rusty Giudici cleared the ball out of danger. Holy Cross (8-1-1; 4-1-0) started the scoring in the 30th minute as Paul Kitson sent the ball to Matt Ney outside the box who broke in alone and was able to beat American goalkeeper Michael Behonick in the lower left corner of the net. AU outshot the Crusaders 7-2 in the first half, but trailed 1-0 at intermission.

Holy Cross jumped out to a 2-0 lead just over two minutes into the second half as Ney brought the ball up the left side and centered the ball to Napolitano who scored in the upper 90 of the net. AU had an excellent chance to cut the lead in half in the 62nd minute as Freddy Llerena just missed a centering pass which then went off a Holy Cross defender and hit the right post of the net before being cleared.

American finally found the net in the 73rd minute as Shawn Kuykendall passed the ball to his brother Kris Kuykendall who found Jeff Kinney. Kinney beat Baker in the lower right corner of the net for his first goal of the season and to cut the deficit in half.

The Eagles continued to attack and found the equalizer in the 80th minute as Llerena passed the ball to Kris Bertsch. Bertsch headed the ball in to the right corner of the net to knot the match at 2-2. Both teams had opportunities in the last 10 minutes of regulation, but neither squad could find the net.

AU dominated the first overtime, having five shots to only one for the Crusaders. In the 92nd minute, Sean Albright curled a pass in to Larry McDonald whose shot went just past left post. Four minutes later, Bertsch gathered the ball in the box, but he was forced to take a side volley that Baker saved.

In the second overtime, a long ball was sent ahead to Ney who split the AU defense. Charlie Konvier appeared to foul Ney outside the penalty area, but the referee awarded a penalty kick to the Crusaders. Behonick was able to save Napolitano's penalty shot, but Napolitano got his own rebound and put the ball in the net to give Holy Cross the 3-2 victory.

AU outshot the Crusaders 24-11 for the match. Behonick made four saves while Baker made 11. Both Shawn and Kris Kuykendall played very well in the midfield for AU throughout the match as the Eagles held possession for most of the game, but just could not find the net.

American's next match is Saturday, October 19th against Adelphi on Reeves Field at 1 p.m.
