NORFOLK, VA-- Michael Tooley scored off a header in the first half, and it proved to be enough, as Old Dominion beat visiting American, 2-0, here on Saturday evening in a rematch of former Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rivals.
Senior midfielder Carlos Mendes got things rolling for the Monarchs in the first half when he sent a long ball from deep in the American corner to Tooley, who knocked in a header past Eagle goalie Michael Behonick. It was one of only two shots on goal that ODU put up in the first half.
Much of the game was a defensive struggle, as the two teams combined for just four shots in the first half.
The second half went much like the first. Tough, physical play punctuated the game, and it wasn't until the 70 minute mark that ODU finally got some breathing space.
Attila Vendegh broke through the AU defense, netting his 10th goal of the season to put the Monarchs ahead for good.
Old Dominion held a 9-5 advantage in shots on the evening, while the Eagles had a 5-1 advantage in corners.
American returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 26, when it plays its first-ever Patriot League match at Navy at 7:00 p.m. The Eagles then return home to host Lafayette on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 2:00 p.m. at Reeves Field.
