Women's Soccer Tops Navy in Patriot League Debut

Annapolis, Md. -- The American women's soccer team came out strong from the outset against Navy and went on to win, 1-0, on a goal by senior Diane Wootton (Damascus, Md./Middle Tennessee State). In the team's inaugural Patriot League match, the Eagles scored just over a minute into the first half and held on to the lead through dominant, aggressive play for the duration of the game.

The goal came when freshman Maha Elnabawi (Herndon, Va./Oakton) took a pass from senior Katie Moore (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) and then found Wootton in front of the net who fired in the game winner just 1:08 into the game.

Freshman keeper Jen Liese (Rushland, Pa./Council Rock) had another outstanding showing, recording 12 saves, including eight in the second half when the Mids launched an offensive blast. Navy saw many scoring opportunities, but were unable to ripple the back of the net.

The referee issued five yellow cards and called 32 fouls between the two teams throughout the game.

The Eagles move to 2-1 on the season and will face Bucknell in three days on Saturday, Sept. 22 on Reeves Field at 2:00 p.m.
