Washington, D.C. -- Despite outshooting Lafayette 22-8, American fell, 3-2, in a hard-fought Patriot League match on Saturday. Senior Katie Moore (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel) and Maha Elnabawi (Herndon, Va./Oakton) each scored a goal in the contest.
Lafayette put up two scores in the first half. Sophomore Meghan Ramsey netted the first at only 3:15 into the game off an assist from junior Emily Meyers. The Leopards scored again right before halftime when sophomore Katie Morton finished a pass from junior Katie Fina.
American stormed into the second half, scoring almost immediately at 46:30 when Moore took a pass from classmate Diane Wootton (Damascus, Md./Middle Tennessee State) and drove in a goal past Lafayette keeper Marissa Mullins. The Eagles scored again at 73:30 when freshman Fedjah Laraque (East Rockaway, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) sent a pass in the box to Elnabawi, who drove the goal into the far left corner.
Lafayette scored for the third time at 76:02 into the contest when midfielder Ramsey found the back of the net for the second time off a header from sophomore Kerrie Kiley. The Eagles almost tied it up again at the 82:00 mark but had the goal called back because of a hand ball by a Lafayette defender in the box. The resulting penalty kick went just wide right for American.
American moves to 5-3-0 overall, 2-1 in the Patriot League. The Eagles next play at Georgetown on Wednesday, October 10, at 3:00 p.m. They travel to West Point to face Army for their fourth Patriot League match of the season on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 7:00 p.m.
