Baltimore, Md. -- American and UMBC played to a scoreless draw today as wind and cold temperatures made scoring hard to come by in a double overtime game. Both teams played hard for 120 minutes under an overcast sky that eventually opened up with a hard rain.
The Retrievers (7-5-1) outshot American (6-4-1) by a margin of 20-6 but neither team saw many quality scoring chances. Freshman goalkeeper Jen Liese (Rushland, Pa./Council Rock) saved a near UMBC goal early in the second overtime after Retriever forward Lori Quintavalle booted the ball off the post.
Liese made six saves overall while teammate Jessica Bonnell (Hillsboro, N.J./Hillsboro), who started the game for the Eagles, made three saves. Retriever keeper Becky Hicock made two saves in the game for UMBC.
The tie today meants that the Eagles move to 6-4-1 overall, 3-1 in the Patriot League. They continue to sit at second place in Patriot League standings. American plays host to a former CAA foe, Old Dominion, this Friday at 3:00 p.m. on Reeves Field.
