WORCESTER, MA - Holy Cross junior Rusty Giudici headed in the game-winning goal in the 101st minute of overtime to lead the Crusaders to a 2-1 victory over American University Sunday afternoon at the Hart Soccer Field.
Holy Cross sophomore William Stewart scored the game's first goal, seconds before the intermission, to give the Crusaders a 1-0 advantage going into halftime. He finished a feed from Matt Ney to get Holy Cross on the board.
The Eagles dominated much of the action, and outshot Holy Cross, 16-8. American also took six corners to the Crusaders five. A telling stat, though, was American seven infractions for offsides.
American forward Adam Rosen took a feed from Jonathon Colton, and deposited it in the back of the net, tying the game in the 86th minute. The teams remained deadlocked for the final three-plus minutes of regulation, and went into into overtime.
Holy Cross goalkeeper Kevin Baker made six saves for the Crusaders. American keeper Michael Behonick made three stops.
With the win the Crusaders find themselves in sole possession of first place in the Patriot League. They improve their season record to 5-3-1, 3-0-1 Patriot League. American falls to 5-5-0 and 3-1-0 in Patriot League play.
American returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 17, when it hosts local rival George Mason at 3:00 p.m. The Eagles then take on Princeton on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 2:00 p.m. at Reeves Field as part of Homecoming Weekend festivities.
