Richmond Posts A 4-0 Victory Over American

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Four different Spiders delivered goals, Richmond outshot American, 35-10 and exploded for three second half goals to roll to a 4-0 victory in Colonial Athletic Association women's soccer action tonight at UR Soccer Complex. Winners of three straight matches, the Spiders improve to 5-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play, while the Eagles fall to 1-6-2 on the campaign and remain winless (0-3-0) in league action.

Spider sophomore midfielder Jenna Merriam (Vorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) opened the scoring at the 18:52 mark, heading in a crossing pass from senior midfielder Nicole Froman (Glen Arm, Md./Loch Raven). With the game-winning strike, Merriam registered her team-leading seventh point of the season.

After out-shooting AU 18-2 in the first half, Richmond owned a 1-0 lead at intermission. Junior forward Laura Gincel (Princeton, N.J./West Windsor) added to Richmond's advantage at 47:54, blasting a seven-yard shot into the back of the net, with Froman assisting on her second goal of the evening.

Following an AU misplay in their defensive third, Richmond senior forward Brooke Sands (Dallas, Texas/Dallas Episcopal) controlled a loose ball and chipped in a shot past diving Eagle 'keeper Jackie Sierodzinski (4 goals, 13 saves) at 77:28. Sands recorded her third point of the evening, assisting on freshman back Edda Gardarsdottir's (Reykjavik, Iceland/Briedholti) strike at 80:18.

Richmond's four-goal output marked a season-high for a team seemingly hitting its stride following a three-goal showing at East Carolina on Wednesday, September 20. "We used our aggressiveness to our advantage tonight," said Richmond head coach Peter Albright. "We continue to gain confidence and I thought we were sharp overall."

The Spiders resume conference action on Friday, September 29, hosting cross-town rival Virginia Commonwealth University at 7 p.m. at UR Soccer Complex.
