UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Princeton junior midfielder Linley Gober (Atlanta, Ga./The Westminster School) delivered a goal and added an assist to bolster the Tigers to a 3-0 victory over American this afternoon in the second round of the Wachovia Classic at the University of Richmond Soccer Complex.
With the victory, Princeton recorded their eighth shutout win of the season and improve to 8-2-0 overall. Meanwhile, the Eagles slip to 2-8-2 on the campaign.
Following a scoreless first half which saw Princeton outshoot AU 14-3, the Tigers got on the board at the 63:28 mark when Gober lofted a shot outside the penalty area just over the outstretched arms of Eagle 'keeper Julie Sierodzinski (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central). Tiger sophomore forward Krista Ariss (Burlington, Ontario, Canada/Nelson) assisted on the play.
Princeton accounted for two goals in the contests final 20 minutes with Ariss chipping in a one-timer at the 73:39 mark before senior forward Amee Reyes (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly Schools) drilled in a shot just inside the far post off of an assist from freshman midfielder Katie Krum (Hellertown, Pa./Moravian Academy) to close the scoring at 78:37.
The Tigers controlled the match's tempo throughout, firing 26 shots to AU's five. Princeton senior net-minder Jordan Rettig (West Hartford, Conn./Saint Paul's School) made just one save while Sierodzinski stymied 13 shots.
Wachovia Classic tournament action resumes this afternoon with tournament host Richmond (8-3-0) meeting Radford (3-9-1) in the title match at approximately 2:30 p.m.
