WASHINGTON, D.C. - American's Ashley Flanigan (Sr., Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury) scored at 110:12 to break a 1-1 tie and give the Eagles (2-6-2, 1-3 in the CAA) an overtime win against University of North Carolina-Wilmington (5-6, 0-2) today at Reeves Field.
The game-winning goal resulted from an AU free kick taken by Diane Wootton (Jr., Damascus, MD/Damascus (MTSU)) just outside the penalty area. Wootton hit a low cross to the near post and Flanigan one-timed the ball past UNCW goalie Meghan Fitzsimmons from six yards away.
A Sarah Rosen (Jr., Atlanta, GA/Woodward Academy) goal at 78:45 gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead but UNCW's Mandy Fletcher tied the game with less than two minutes to play when she headed home a Denise Schromm free-kick that had bouned off the right post.
AU's first goal came when Anabel Jiminez (Fr., Kensington, MD/Bullis) found Rosen with a cross to the far post that she put past Fitzsimmons from six yards out.
In goal for the Eagles, Jackie Sierodzinski (Jr., Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) made nine saves while Fitzsimmons made three for the Seahawks. AU next competes in the University of Richmond Spider Classic on Oct. 6 and will play Radford while UNCW next faces Coastal Carolina at home on Oct. 4.
