Left full-time position at AU in September, 2022

Andrew Smith joined the athletics senior staff at American University as the Associate Athletics Director for Compliance and Internal Operations in June, 2015. Smith is responsible for the Eagles’ compliance office and operations, serves as the liaison for human resources as well as admissions and financial aid, and is the sport supervisor for volleyball, lacrosse, men's soccer and men's and women's swimming and diving. 

In addition to his athletics department duties, Smith is an adjunct faculty member in AU's Master's in Sport Analytics and Management Program.

Smith came to American after serving as the Assistant A.D. for Compliance at Fordham University for four and a half years. While there, he was responsible for NCAA compliance monitoring and education for more than 50 staff members and more than 450 student-athletes competing for the Rams’ 22-sport varsity program in the Atlantic-10 and Patriot League.
 
He is a licensed attorney with experience in higher education law, sports law, sports management and dispute resolution. He earned his Juris Doctorate in 2008 from St. John’s University. Smith is a member of the New York State and Westchester County bar associations.
 
He served one year as a teacher and guidance counselor at Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, N.Y., where he was head coach of the junior varsity basketball team and a varsity assistant for five seasons. The 2009-10 varsity team won the New York City Class ‘A’ championship and appeared in the state finals.
 
From 2008 to 2012, Smith was also a co-editor and contributor to SportsNet New York’s “The Knicks Blog,” writing extensively about the team and serving as the blog’s legal analyst. He wrote and edited hundreds of articles and was a regular contributor to videos and podcasts.
 
A 2004 graduate of Boston College with a bachelor’s in history and communications, Smith also holds an MBA from Fordham, earned in 2014.
 
Smith and his wife, Bridget, a pediatric occupational therapist for Montgomery County Public Schools, live in Rockville, Md. They have two daughters - Noelle, born in December, 2016, and Julianne, born in January, 2019.
