Chris Ray left American University in August, 2024.
Following a six-year stint at Georgetown, Chris Ray returned to American University to serve as the Associate Athletics Director for Compliance & Internal Operations in October, 2022. Ray is a familiar face to many, having been the Assistant Director for Compliance in AU Athletics from 2013-16.
Â
Ray's most recent role at Georgetown was much the same as the one he took on at American—Associate AD for Compliance. He was promoted to associate in 2021 after five years as an Assistant AD. In addition to his duties as a compliance officer, Ray served as the sport administrator for Georgetown softball.
Â
While at Georgetown, Ray oversaw all areas of the compliance office including education, monitoring, and enforcement, in addition to managing the operating budget. He assisted in developing and implementing a Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) Program for the Hoyas, and was responsible for all compliance matters for over 50 coaches and over 750 student-athletes across 30 Division I teams.
Â
As the Assistant Director of Compliance at AU during his first stint from 2013-16, Ray helped oversee compliance matters for 16 programs and over 200 student-athletes. During a transition period in 2015, Ray oversaw the department on an interim basis.
Â
Ray was a Division I student-athlete at Providence College from 2005-09, serving as team captain of the men's swimming & diving team and competing in the Big East Conference Championships in 2007, 2008 and 2009. After graduating from Providence with a degree in finance, he took on various roles over the following three years in marketing, operations, sales and finance.
Â
While serving as an assistant men's and women's swim coach for SUNY Old Westbury in New York, Ray earned his master's in sport management from Adelphi University in 2013. In his final semester, he was an athletic department intern at St. John's University in Queens before graduating and starting his position at American.
Â
Ray and his wife, Christine, reside in Arlington, Va., with their sons, Thomas and Andrew.
