Terry Weir returns to American in 2010 for his second stint with the Eagles after spending five seasons in Washington DC from 2002-07. His primary responsibility is assisting with the distance/mid-distance runners and recruiting. He returns to American after working as the assistant cross country and track coach at the University of Maryland in College Park, Md.
In Weir's first year at Maryland, the Terrapin cross country and distance runners saw immediate results. Both the men's and women's 4x800m relay teams set school records as did the women's distance medley relay. Greg Kelsey made All-ACC in the men's 3000m indoors and steeplechase outdoors. He was the first male distance runner to score at ACC's in 14 years. Megan Braffet was All-ACC in the10K run placing 3rd. Her time provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Championships.
The 2008-09 season saw the men's cross country team finish 6th in the ACC, the highest finish in 20 years. Weir also coached walk-on Alex Lundy to an automatic berth to the NCAA Cross Country Championships. In outdoors, Kristen Reed broke the school record and regional qualified in the women's steeplechase, the first Terrapin female distance runner to qualify for the NCAA Region Meet.
While at his first stint at AU, Weir helped Coach Centrowitz coach and mentor 8 different athletes to 15 All-American honors in cross country and track. A few of the many highlights were the men's cross country team receiving automatic berths to the NCAA Cross Country Championships in '04, ‘05 and '06 seasons, All-American Keira Carlstrom placing 6th overall at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in '05 and the men's DMR receiving All-American honors in '03.
Weir began his coaching career in the Virginia high school system spending five years at Thomas Jefferson and Oakton high schools. At Oakton, Weir coached 13 state champions, 2 USA Junior Track All-Americans, 1- Indoor National Champion and a World Junior XC qualifier. In his first year, Oakton won its first women's 4x800m relay state title. Weir then went on to coach future Eagle All-Americans Keira Carlstrom, to two state cross country and 1600m titles. She also received high school All-American honors in the 1500m, and Phil Gaeta, the Indoor National Mile Champion and high school All-American honors in the 1500m. In 2001, Weir coached Matt Maline to 6th place at the USA Junior World Cross Country Championships, earning a spot on the Team USA World Junior Cross Country Team.
At Thomas Jefferson, Weir assisted head coach Matt Ryan in guiding 12 Virginia state champions, winning the 1998 women's Virginia Indoor AAA State Team Championship, women's Nike Indoor National Champions in the DMR and breaking the Virgina State Record in the women's 4x800m relay.
Weir ran professionally for the Reebok Enclave under coaches/mentors Matt Centrowitz and Frank Gagliano training for the 1996 Olympic Trials. At the University of South Alabama, Weir was the 1993 SunBelt Cross Country, as was select as the 1993 Conference Runner of the year. He was member of the All-Conference team twice and five-time All-Conference pick in track and field.Â
