Madison Neuner

Madison joined American University in August of 2024 as an assistant coach and athletic communications assistant. They’re no stranger to the program — their sister, Emily, ran for the Eagles from 2019 through 2022 and was a regular scorer in cross country.

In their first season with the Eagles, Madison saw the cross country team run several personal bests, with both teams placing seventh at the Patriot League Championships. In the indoor and outdoor track seasons, the distance program ran 40 new top-10 times and 132 personal bests. Madison, a steeplechase specialist, helped three steeplechasers run multiple personal bests throughout the season, including seeing senior Danny O’Neill place sixth in the steeple at the Patriot League Championships.

As an athletic communications assistant, Madison covered the cross country and track programs throughout the year with previews, recaps, photography, and social media. They also covered several other AU programs, including field hockey, basketball, wrestling, and swim & dive.

Madison had a successful career as a college athlete, running for Northeastern University then as a grad transfer at Syracuse University. At Northeastern, they were a three-time scorer in the CAA steeplechase, including winning the event in 2023. An avid mental health advocate, Madison helped found the Northeastern chapter of The Hidden Opponent. They graduated in 2023 with a degree in journalism and communication studies. Madison was a two-time NCAA East First Round qualifier in the steeplechase, placing 24th as a senior at Northeastern and 15th as a grad student at Syracuse. While at Syracuse, they contributed to the Orange’s first NCAA cross country Northeast Regional win since 2011, qualifying for the NCAA Championships. In outdoor track, they earned ACC First Team honors with a runner-up finish in the steeplechase. Their steeple PR of 9:48.82 qualified them for the 2024 Olympic Trials, where they placed 30th. They graduated from Syracuse in July of 2024 with a master’s degree in Magazine, News & Digital Journalism.

A native of Liverpool, N.Y., Madison now lives in Washington, D.C.
