Kevin Boyle competed for St. John's University in the Big East Conference during the early 1980's. Upon graduation, he continued his competitive running career as a member of the New York Athletic Club. At that time he was also attending law school at St. John's University in the night program. During the day, he served as track coach at Great Neck South HS on Long Island, guiding his team to three sectional championships. He also coached the fastest 1,000-meter and one mile high school runner in the country.

Upon graduation from law school, Boyle entered the U.S. Army as a Judge Advocate. During this time he continued his running career as a member of the All Army Track Team. In his 26-year military career, Boyle served in positions of increased responsibility, including serving as the Chief of Staff for the Judge Advocate General's Legal Center and School in Charlottesville, Va. (The Department of Defense's American Bar Association accredited law school); he also served as the Chief Instructor of all Army prosecutors throughout the world, and served as the principle legal advisor for all U.S. Army forces stationed on the border between North and South Korea and in Europe. He earned two Legion of Merit awards, one of only two United States military decorations to be issued as a neck order (the other being the Medal of Honor).

Upon retirement in 2015, he returned to coaching by joining the American University staff. In addition to his coaching duties, Boyle is a full-time professor at American University in the Justice, Law and Criminology Department.
