Julie Culley is in her third season as an assistant coach at American University. Culley is a former Div. I head track and field coach and continues to compete at the national level.
Most recently, Culley competed at the 2009 USATF Championships where she advanced to the finals of the 5000 meter run. In the finals she placed fourth overall and set a new personal best time of 15:33.92. Culley also finished 21st in the 8k at the 2009 USA Cross Country Championships in Maryland, Culley also competed at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials where she advanced to the finals of the 5000 meter run. In the finals she placed seventh overall with a time of 15:34.43. Culley also qualified for the trials in the 1500 but chose to focus on the 5000. Earlier in the year Culley placed third at the USA Indoor National Championships in the 3000 and was a member of the U.S. National Team at the IAAF Indoor World Championships. Culley boasts personal bests of 4:14 in the 1500, 4:38 in the mile, 9:00 in the 3000 and 15:34 in the 5000.
Culley began her coaching career at Loyola College in 2004 where she helped to found the women's track and field program and became the program's first head coach. As head coach, Culley was responsible for overseeing all activities of the Div. I program including training, recruiting, and strength and conditioning. Culley stepped down as head coach following the 2006 season and served as an assistant coach for the 2007 season. Culley was also an assistant coach for the men's and women's cross country teams at Loyola from 2004-07.
A 2004 graduate of Rutgers College, Culley earned a bachelors degree in marketing and political science. She was named the 2004 NCAA Woman of the Year for the state of New Jersey and was a 2002 cross country All-American. A three-time cross country team MVP and two-time track MVP, Culley holds school records in the 3000, 5000 and distance medley relay.
