American University Swimming & Diving

Spring 2023 Newsletter

Greetings from American Swimming & Diving!

Happy Summer! I hope this finds you enjoying the warmer months with friends, family and fun. Here at American, we have members of the team studying abroad, back in their hometowns, or staying in Washington, DC. Some are taking classes, while others are working various jobs or taking advantage of terrific internship opportunities across the country.

I wanted to take this time to update you on the success we had in and out of the pool during the 2022-2023 season, introduce you to the team for the upcoming year, and bring to your attention an incredible donation opportunity that would have a significant impact on the program.

As always, thank you for your support of this program.  Go Eagles!

Season Wrap-Up

This season saw many personal bests at the Patriot League Championships and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championships. At the Patriot League Championships, the women’s team tied for its highest finish since 2015 of seventh place, while the men’s team also placed seventh.

Junior Mimi Watts was named the Patriot League Women's Swimmer of the Meet after capturing the titles for the 50 free, 100 fly and 100 free. All three events were school records, and she was the first swimmer to earn this recognition from American since 2006.

Watts was also named the 2023 Patriot League Women’s Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year for her impressive GPA and athletic performances for the season. Watts, along with teammates Nick Buckley and Caleb Farris, earned Patriot League All-Academic Team honors. To be eligible for this honor, athletes must have above a 3.2 cumulative GPA and be a starter in their sport.

As a team, six school records were broken and 19 swimmers and divers placed in the Top 16 in individual events, which is the most that have made it back to finals from American in years.
