Timeline of AU Athletics

Beginnings

1893 - U.S. Congress grants charter to American University.
September, 1914 - Graduate school of American University is opened.
1925 - AU organizes intercollegiate women's and men's basketball teams.
September, 1925 - College of Liberal Arts is opened. The entering class is comprised of 81 students, including both men and women.
Fall, 1925 - George Springston is named athletic director, football coach and basketball coach.
November 5, 1925 - First football game against George Washington University. The football team is comprised of 16 players - 14 of whom are freshman and none of whom have previous playing experience. The season includes three games, against GW, Emerson Institute and Devitt Prep. Home games are played at St. Albans field.
December 17, 1925 - A temporary men's basketball stadium is being built and will contain a cork floor.
January 22, 1926 - AU's first men's intercollegiate basketball game at AU's Ryan Gymnasium; AU loses to Georgetown 40-23.
February 12, 1926 - Students vote for school colors to be orange and blue.
April 23, 1926 - Women's athletic group is organized, mostly involving dance, physical education drills and intramural basketball and field hockey.
October, 1926 - Football schedule includes Emerson College, Blue Ridge College, GW, Shenandoah Collegiate Institution, Maryland Freshman, Gallaudet and Bridgewater College.
October 8, 1926 - First football victory over Emerson, 20-0, at St. Albans Field.
December, 1926 - First basketball victory over Bridgewater College, 55-35. Other basketball opponents include Gallaudet, Catholic, Maryland, Lynchburg, GW, High Point College, NYU, Western Maryland and Blue Ridge College.
December 17, 1926 - New "Theatre Gymnasium" opens. The building cost approximately $100,000 and will serve as a drama stage and athletic facility. The gym contains a hard maple wood floor and its dimensions are 60 ft. wide, 150 ft. long and 22 ft. high. In the first basketball game at the gymnasium, AU defeats Maryland, 21-16.
1927 - AU's enrollment starts to increase dramatically. 180 students are now enrolled, 91 male and 89 female (this is a 185% increase from 1925).
November 4, 1927 - First report of a women's athletic contest against another school, as the women's field hockey team took on George Washington. Women's field hockey team played two more games that year, against GW again and Holton Arms.
March, 1928 - First report of a women's extramural basketball contest is a loss to Gallaudet.
March 21, 1928 - Intercollegiate baseball begins at AU with games scheduled against Catholic, GW, Gallaudet and St. Johns College (Md.).
April 19, 1928 - First report of women's extramural tennis contest is a loss to GW. The article notes that there is no men's tennis team due to lack of financial support and equipment.
November, 1928 - Announcement of first intramural basketball contest with competition among the various classes at AU.
December 19, 1928 - Announcement that a new football/baseball stadium will be built in the near future.
February 21, 1929 - Athletics Director George Springston resigns to concentrate on his legal practice. Walter Young, a former Ohio Wesleyan football player, is appointed the new athletic director. AD Young will also serve as the head coach in football and basketball.
October 24, 1929 - Announcement that all women's extramural contests will be eliminated. The reasoning is that extramural competition stresses individual accomplishment and winning over the enjoyment of the sport and the development of sportsmanship. Also, the women's teams were limited to 3 extramural contests per year and it was deemed to be inefficient to organize teams for such a limited number of contests.
Spring, 1930 - Start of men's intercollegiate tennis, coached by Dr. William Holton (chairman of the Athletics Committee). Four new courts to be constructed near the field hockey field.
Spring, 1930 - Spring football practice begins for the first time.
Mach 21, 1930 - First men's tennis victory is over Catholic.
December 12, 1930 - For the first time, the AU band plays at a sporting event, a basketball game.
October 16, 1931 - New football stadium "American University Field" is opened. [The football stadium may have been located near the Wesley Theological Seminary.]
November 4, 1931 - First men's extramural bowling competition is a loss to Southeastern University at the YMCA.
November, 1932 - Apparently, women's teams were again participating in extramural contests, as the field hockey team played GW.
January 12, 1933 - AU joins the Chesapeake Collegiate Athletic Group with five other colleges, Bridgewater, Hampden-Sydney, Randolph-Macon and Lynchburg. "The conference is composed of colleges who believe that athletics are played for the benefit of every student and not for the fame and honor that might come to the college or any one participant." The conference sets forth various rules regarding eligibility.
June 4, 1934 - First report of athletic scholarships being offered to assist in the recruiting of student-athletes.
December 20, 1934 - Boxing added as an intercollegiate sport.
February 22, 1935 - First boxing competition is a loss to Hampden-Sydney College.
Spring, 1935 - To date, the most active spring sports program in AU's history. Intercollegiate track and tennis are offered.
February, 1936 - AU joins the newly formed Mason-Dixon Conference, along with Baltimore College, Johns Hopkins, St. Johns College, Gallaudet, Catholic, Washington College and Randolph-Macon. [At this time, the conference may be for track only. By 1940, the conference will include all sports.]
February 19, 1937 - Walter Young resigns as athletics director. Gus Welch named new athletic director. Welch was the former head football coach at Washington St. College, and former athletic director of Randolph-Macon College.
Spring, 1937 - Men's tennis team wins Chesapeake Conference Championship.
October 22, 1937 - AD Welch organizes and AU Booster Club, with the purpose of the club being "to organize faculty, alumni and friends to assist those who would be prevented from attending college due to financial difficulties."
November, 1937 - Stafford "Pop" Cassell appointed men's basketball coach.
February, 1938 - AD Welch attempts to start a lacrosse program.
November, 1938 - Baseball team re-instituted for 1939 season. Coached by Cassell.
February, 1939 - AD Welch resigns. Cassell appointed new athletics director, and will still coach baseball and basketball. George Menke named new football coach.
April, 1939 - AD Cassell implements new comprehensive intramural sports program for physical education department. Each male is required to participate in one individual and one group sport, as physical education is considered vital to a liberal education.

1940s and 1950s (Mason-Dixon Era and Expansion of Department)

March, 1940 - Baseball is placed in trial status with 14-game schedule. If program is successful, then it will be given varsity status.
April, 1940 - Mason-Dixon conference finalized; including AU, Delaware University, Johns Hopkins, Maryland Teacher's College, Western Maryland, Washington College, and a few unnamed others. The conference seeks to "solidify small college athletics and to stimulate a competitive spirit." The conference will immediately organize competition for basketball and track, and in the future will organize baseball, tennis, soccer, and wrestling.
October, 1941 - Report that AU games may soon be broadcast over the radio.
March, 1942 - Wrestler Jim Petro places second in the heavyweight division in the Mason-Dixon wrestling tournament. Although it is unclear whether AU has a wrestling program, it appears to be sending individual wrestlers to competitions.
September, 1942 - AD Cassell resigns to take a position with Morningside College in Iowa. Bernhard Kalijarvi named new athletics director and men's basketball coach.
February, 1945 - Arthur Boyd named new men's basketball coach. Basketball team wins its first Mason-Dixon conference championship.
1946 - AU purchases the Leonard Center to house its athletics administration and athletic events. The building, later renamed the Cassell Center, was supposed to be temporary, yet it served as the main athletics complex until Bender Arena opened in 1988.
March, 1946 - Men's basketball team wins Mason-Dixon conference championships; the team is invited to the National Intercollegiate Tournament in Kansas City, Kan., but AD Cassell refuses the bid.
May, 1946 - Contemplating re-instituting the football program. The Board of Trustees votes against bringing a "big-time" football program to AU, but left open the possibility of a smaller program similar to the one in place in 1941.
June, 1946 - Mason-Dixon conference is now comprised of AU, Johns Hopkins, Delaware, Catholic, Gallaudet, Bridgewater, Loyola and Western Maryland.
November 22, 1946 - Expansion in the athletics department with the acquisition of recreation center across Massachusetts Avenue to be used as athletic and recreation center (with a swimming pool and a gym).
March, 1947 - Swimming program has been recently developed. Also, baseball program has returned.
Spring, 1947 - Athletics Director Cassell appointed men's basketball coach. AD Cassell is also appointed chairman of District 29 of the National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball Championship. The winner of the Mason-Dixon tournament will be invited to represent District 29 in the National Intercollegiate Tournament.
May 6, 1947 - Golf team begins play in the Mason-Dixon conference.
August 31, 1947 - Burt Courage hired to coach boxing and swimming.
November, 1947 - Announcement that new track facilities will be built.
September 22, 1948 - Reports of latest improvement to athletic programs: building of asphalt surfaced tennis courts; completely renovating the basketball court and swimming pools (with starting blocks); and providing automatic scoring and time-keeping machine for basketball contests.
May, 1949 - Men's basketball team wins Mason-Dixon conference championship.
October 5, 1949 - Men's soccer program added.
November, 1949 - In compliance with new college basketball rules, the athletics department adds glass backboards and orange rims.
March, 1950 - Men's basketball team wins Mason-Dixon conference championship and is invited to represent DC/MD/VA in National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball Tournament in Kansas City, Kan. This marks the first airplane ride for any AU athletics squad. The team loses in the first round to Pepperdine.
March, 1950 - Men's Swimming wins Mason-Dixon championship.
1950 - War Memorial Athletic Center dedicated to AU athletes who served in the armed forces.
October 19, 1950 - First win for men's soccer program, defeating Towson State Teacher's College.
November, 1950 - Women's field hockey team resumes play.
March, 1951 - Men's basketball wins Mason-Dixon conference championship. Represents the conference in the National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball Tournament. Loss in first round to Baldwin-Wallace (Ohio).
January, 1952 - Basketball team visits Iceland and gives basketball clinics.
November, 1952 - Athletics Director Cassell leaves athletic post to become assistant to the AU president. Hugo Shultze appointed athletic director and men's basketball coach.
December 3, 1953 - AU radio station begins to broadcast men's basketball away games.
March, 1954 - For the first time since 1951, AU fields a track team
March, 1954 - Report that women compete in extramural contests in field hockey, basketball, tennis and softball.
April, 1954 - Report that students need to participate and support the various sports. Since AU is a small school with no/few scholarships, it relies on the participation of general student population.
May 25, 1954 - New baseball field announced.
October, 1954 - Fencing classes are offered and intramural competition is contemplated.
November, 1954 - Wrestling program offered.
October, 1955 - Reeves Field built and dedicated. (Reeves will host women's Olympic Trials for track and field events in August 1956).
November 7, 1956 - AD Hugo Shultze resigns. Replaced by David Carrasco, the former athletics director and basketball coach at Montgomery Blair High School.
December, 1956 - Part-time AU student Shelly Mann from Australia wins Olympic Gold Medal in 100 meter butterfly.
August, 1957 - Men's basketball head coach David Carrasco brings in Willie Jones, Dick Wells and Jim Howell as part of the first racially integrated team in the DMV.
February 5, 1958 - Men's basketball player Frank Weiss sets AU all-time scoring record.
February 12, 1958 - Men's basketball player Willie Jones sets AU single-game scoring record with 39 points.
March 5, 1958 - Men's basketball team wins Mason-Dixon regular season and conference tournament. The team is invited to the "small colleges" championship tournament. This tournament selects teams from 8 regions: Northeast, Great Lakes, East, Midwest, Mideast, Southwest, South Central and Pacific Coast. Each region consists of 2 conference champions and 2 at-large teams. The champions of the Mason-Dixon conference and Middle-Atlantic States conference receive automatic bids to the Eastern Regional Tournament.
March 12, 1958 - The men's basketball team defeats Buffalo University and Wagner to win the Eastern Region. Willie Jones named region's MVP. AU is now ranked 17th among small schools and goes to Indianapolis to play in the championships.
March 19, 1958 - Men's basketball team loses to Evansville in the first round of the small school championships.
March 26, 1958 - Men's basketball player Dick Wells receives Little College All-American Honorable Mention.
April 30, 1958 - Varsity golf team is announced.
May 14, 1958 - Mason-Dixon conference now comprised of 14 teams: AU, Roanoake, Hampden-Sydney, Mount St. Mary's, Lynchburg, Johns Hopkins, Randolph-Macon, Loyola, Catholic, Washington College, Towson St., Western Maryland, Bridgewater and Gallaudet.
September 17, 1958 - Men's basketball coach Dave Carrasco wins George Mikan Award for having shown the most improvement among college coaches in the nation.
November 5, 1958 - Men's soccer player Ian Volgyes sets school record by scoring five goals in a game.
January 7, 1959 - Men's basketball's Willie Jones breaks his own single game record by scoring 41 points.
February 7, 1959 - Men's basketball student-athlete Willie Jones breaks his single game record by scoring 44 points.
March 4, 1959 - Men's basketball team wins Mason-Dixon championship and receives automatic bid to small college East Region tournament.
March 11, 1959 - Men's basketball team wins small college East Region by defeating Adelphi and Hofstra. Willie Jones named region's MVP. The advances to the championships where it loses to North Carolina A&T in the first round.
March 25, 1959 - Men's basketball player Willie Jones becomes school's all-time leading scorer. Jones also named Honorable Mention All-American.
Spring, 1959 - To date, 1959 is the school's most successful year in terms of athletics, as three teams win conference titles (wrestling, basketball and swimming).

1960s and 1970s (Division I Transition)

February 24, 1960 - Men's wrestling team wins Mason-Dixon regular season title and conference tournament.
March 9, 1960 - Men's basketball wins Mason-Dixon championship and represents the conference in the small college East Region tournament. The team defeats Upsala and Fairfield to win the East Region. Dick Wells is named MVP of the region. In the small college championships, the team loses in the first round to Evansville. Willie Jones scores 54 points in that game and is named to the all-tournament team. Jones' 54 points sets the NCAA Division II (College Division) record for single-game points in the Tournament.
March 23, 1960 - Mason-Dixon conference now consists of 16 teams, and a North and South division.
March 23, 1960 - Men's basketball player Willie Jones is named First Team Small College All-American.
April, 1960 - Men's golf team begins to use Indian Springs as its home golf course.
Summer, 1960 - Renovations to Leonard Gymnasium include trophy cases and adding new bleachers.
February 10, 1960 - AU athletic program ranked in top 10 among nation's small colleges.
March 8, 1961 - Crew becomes official intercollegiate sport.
May, 1961 - Track team wins first Mason-Dixon championship.
Fall, 1961 - AU offers 12 men's intercollegiate sports. Fall sports are tennis, cross-country, soccer, crew; winter sports are basketball, wrestling and track; and spring sports are track, baseball, tennis and golf.
1964 - AD Carrasco resigns. Robert Frailey is named the new athletics director.
1966 - Baseball's Bill Mason becomes AU's first baseball player to be named All-American.
Spring, 1966 - Basketball's Art Beatty is second-leading rebounder in the nation.
March 4, 1966 - Men's swimming team wins Mason-Dixon championship.
March 15, 1966 - AU enters the NCAA indoor track championships with the top-ranked mile relay team and finishes in fifth place in the NCAA indoor championships.
March 22, 1966 - Men's swimming team finishes seventh in the NCAA college division national championships. Diver Ray Crowe wins the college division NCAA diving championship in the 11-meter board, becoming the first AU athlete to win an NCAA championship. Swimmer Tim Miller finishes third in the national breast stroke championships and is named All-American.
March 22, 1966 - Men's track team wins the first Mason-Dixon indoor track championship and the NCAA Eastern Regional college division.
May 3, 1966 - Pole vaulter Peter Chen becomes first AU athlete to win a Penn Relay Championship.
May 17, 1966 - Men's track team wins second consecutive Mason-Dixon indoor track championship.
May 20, 1966 - Baseball team wins Mason-Dixon championship.
Summer, 1966 - First publication of AU athletics Newsletter, "Birds of a Feather."
Summer, 1966 - Middle-Atlantic Conference includes St. Joseph's, Temple, Bucknell, Lafayette, Gettysburg, La Salle, Rider and Delaware.
Winter, 1966 - Men's basketball begins competing at the Division I level.
December 16, 1966 - Men's track team members Peter Chen (pole vault) and Andrew Butch Bell (440 meter hurdles) named College Division All-Americans.
Spring, 1967 - Basketball's Art Beatty is 13th leading rebounder in the nation and teammate Gordan Stiles is 19th leading rebounder; AU team finishes fifth in the nation in rebounding.
March 14, 1967 - Pole vaulter Peter Chen finishes sixth in the NCAA indoor track championships.
August, 1967 - Pole vaulter Peter Chen wins NCAA college division championship.
August, 1967 - Swimmer Tim Miller is named Small College All-American.
Summer, 1967 - Hurdler Butch Bell finishes first in college division 440 meter intermediate hurdles and second in the university division. He becomes the first AU athlete to be named "University" Division All-American.
September, 1967 - Plans proposed for a new athletics arena to house the athletic department and gymnasium (with capacity of 5,000 - 7,000).
March 19, 1968 - Middle-Atlantic Conference is divided into two divisions: East includes AU, Hofstra, Lasalle, St. Josephs, Temple and West Chester. West includes Bucknell, Delaware, Gettysburg, Lafayette, Lehigh and Rider.
March 19, 1968 - Pole vaulter Peter Chen finishes second in the NCAA indoor championship.
September 20, 1968 - AU student Francine Fox, who won a silver medal in the 1964 Olympic Games in kayak doubles, qualifies for the same event for the 1968 Olympic Games.
January 4, 1969 - Herbert "Zombie" Sanders, who served AU athletics for 31 years as a trainer and equipment manager, dies.
March 14, 1969 - Tom Young, former assistant coach at Maryland, is named head basketball coach.
May 16, 1969 - AU creates Athletics Hall of Fame; first inductees are Jim Birthright ('28); Bill Kessler ('29); Joseph Carlo ('38) and Hugo Schulze ('41).
August 13, 1969 - Under new NCAA legislation, freshmen are allowed to play on varsity teams, thus eliminating freshman teams (but this legislation does not apply to basketball).
May 15, 1970 - Golf team wins its first Middle Atlantic Conference championship.
October, 1970 - AU club football team debuts on Reeves Field. First win comes against Fairleigh Dickinson. The team finishes the season with a record of 1-4.
May 14, 1971 - Men's basketball's Kermit Washington finishes second in the nation in rebounding. He is also named First Team Academic All-American.
November 22, 1971 - Men’s cross country places 19th at the NCAA Championships in Knoxville, Tenn., a race in which eight future Olympians competed.
December 3, 1971 - Cross country team wins Middle Atlantic Conference Championships.
1972 - Title IX legislation enacted, requiring equal funding for men's and women's sports programs.
April, 1972 - AU is charter member of the Eastern Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women. The association is "designed to uphold and promote the highest standards for women's intercollegiate athletics programs." AU's women's field hockey coach Barbara Reimann is elected the association's treasurer.
April, 1972 - Basketball's Kermit Washington leads nation in rebounding.
October 20, 1972 - First "midnight madness" at AU.
1973 - Wrestler Ron Ferrara becomes first AU wrestler to qualify for the NCAA tournament.
March 2, 1973 - Men's basketball team is invited to NIT, loses in first round to Louisville.
March 23, 1973 - Basketball's Kermit Washington named First Team All-American.
September 21, 1973 - Jim Lynam, assistant coach at St. Joseph's, named new head men's basketball coach.
April 5, 1974 - Several Middle Atlantic Conference schools form new East Coast Conference. The East division includes AU, Hofstra, Temple, La Salle, St. Joseph's and Drexel. The West division includes West Chester, Bucknell, Lehigh, Lafayette, Delaware and Rider.
Fall 1975-1976 - Women's teams begin participating in postseason tournaments. Women's field hockey qualifies for Maryland's Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Tournament; the Women's volleyball and basketball team also participate in tournaments, such as the Capital Collegiate Conference Tournament against Georgetown, Catholic, Howard, and George Mason.
1975 - Women's basketball team begins to play at Cassell Gym rather than Clendening Gym.
1976 - AU Mascot "Clawed" introduced. Created from a cartoon sketched by Athletics Director Frailey.
March 2, 1978 - Wrestler Loren Danielson becomes second AU wrestler to qualify for the NCAA Tournament.
March 24, 1978 - Men's basketball player Russell "Boo" Bowers is named co-rookie of the year in the East Coast Conference.
May, 1978 - Gary Williams named new head men's basketball coach.
November 10, 1978 - Men's soccer team receives its first bid to the NCAA tournament, falling to Clemson in the first round.
December 13, 1978 - Men's basketball student-athlete Ray Voelkel sets the NCAA record for consecutive field goals, going four-for-four versus St. Mary's (Md.) to reach 24 straight. He hit one more in the next game before missing to extend the record to 25 straight.
October 12, 1979 - Baseball team experiences its best season with a 16-2 mark. Wins Capital Collegiate Conference tournament (played against local schools).
November, 1979 - Men's soccer team captures its first East Coast Conference championship and receives a NCAA bid. Loses to Clemson in quarterfinals.

1980s and 1990s (CAA Era Begins)

January 25, 1980 - Men's soccer coach Pete Mehlert selected as the Mid-Atlantic Region's Coach of the Year.
Spring, 1980 - Men's basketball student-athlete Russell Bowers finishes the season as the nation's seventh leading scorer, averaging 26.9 points per game.
December 1, 1980 - AU retires Kermit Washington's No. 24.
October 10, 1980 - Athletics Director Frailey chosen as President of ECAC.
March 20, 1981 - Men's basketball wins the East Coast Conference regular season but loses in the finals of the conference tournament. AU finishes the season with the best record in the East (24-5), and receives a bid to the NIT, losing in the first round to Toledo.
November 13, 1981 - Women's volleyball team finishes with its best record, 30-12.
March, 1982 - Men's basketball team loses in the first round of the NIT to Bradley, its third trip to the NIT (1973, 1981) since joining Division I in 1966.
Spring, 1982 - Men's golf team wins East Coast Conference championship.
Spring, 1982 - Ed Tapscott, AU's assistant basketball coach, is named the new head coach after Gary Williams' departure.
December 16, 1982 - Men's basketball team defeats No. 5 ranked Georgetown for its most memorable win in years.
November 11, 1983 - Men's soccer team wins the East Coast Conference championship.
January 27, 1984 - Men's soccer player Mike Brady is named First Team All-American.
February 3, 1984 - Women's basketball student-athlete Darsi Smith becomes the second player to score 1,000 career points. The first was Jacquie Frazier.
April 27, 1984 - Men's golf team wins East Coast Conference Golf championship.
March 9, 1984 - Women's basketball student-athlete Darsi Smith is named the East Coast Conference's Player of the Year.
March 23, 1984 - AU leaves the East Coast Conference to become part of the ECAC South. Other teams include UNC-Wilmington, George Mason, Navy, Richmond, William & Mary, James Madison, East Carolina.
October 12, 1984 - Men's soccer student-athlete Michael Brady sets school scoring record, breaking previous record set by Lee Kenworth in 1966. Brady is also named the ECAC South Player of the Year, Second Team All-American and is selected to play for the U.S. National Team.
November 30, 1984 - Men's soccer team reaches the NCAA Tournament, but loses in the second round to fourth-ranked Virginia.
December, 1984 - Men's soccer coach Pete Mehlert is named the ECAC South and Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year.
1985-1986 - Ground broken for the new Khashoggi Sports and Convocation Center (which later becomes Bender Arena).
April 26, 1985 - New inductees to AU's Athletics Hall of Fame: Kermit Washington, Butch Bell, Bill Mason (baseball) and Vidvus Celtnicks ('65 graduate who lettered in 5 sports - cross country, track, soccer, wrestling and crew).
Summer, 1985 - ECAC South changes its name to Colonial Athletic Association.
October 11, 1985 - Women's tennis student-athlete Michele Sheskin is named Academic All-American.
November 15, 1985 - Men's soccer team finishes season ranked fifth in the country and enters the NCAA tournament as the No. 1 seed in the South Atlantic region.
November 22, 1985 - Men's soccer Michael Brady is named Colonial Athletic Association player of the year and Pete Mehlert is named conference coach of the year.
November-December, 1985 - Men's soccer team defeats George Mason in South Atlantic region finals, tops South Carolina in the NCAA quarterfinals and beats Hartwick in the NCAA semifinals.
December 14, 1985 - Men's soccer team loses to UCLA in the NCAA championship game in eight overtimes. The game was the longest NCAA soccer game in history.
Winter, 1986 - Men's soccer's Glen Buchanan named Second Team GTE Academic All-American.
January 31, 1986 - Proposition 48 enacted, requires freshmen to meet minimum SAT and GPA requirements.
February 28, 1986 - Men's basketball student-athlete Frank Ross finishes the season as the 10th leading scorer in the nation with 23.2 points per game.
March 28, 1986 - Baseball coach Dee Frady gets his 400th career win after coaching for 23 years.
September 15, 1986 - Men's soccer's Michael Brady has his No. 14 retired.

February 12, 1990 - Men's swimming team wins CAA championship. Sergio Lopez is named the outstanding swimmer.

August, 1990 - Women's soccer begins its first season as a varsity sport. Freshman Liz Pike registered 21 goals and 49 points in the first season, both of which remain season records at AU today.
January 15, 1992 - Women's basketball beats Old Dominion, then a national power, 68-66, in the first-ever Colonial Athletic Association matchup between the two schools.
March, 1992 - Women's lacrosse begins its first season as a varsity sport.
January 25, 1995 - Men's basketball makes one of the best comebacks of the 1990s. After being down 24 at halftime to George Mason, the Eagles score 73 second-half points to win the game. It is believed to be the best comeback of the 1994-95 season.
November 24, 1996 - Women's basketball defeats No. 7 Virginia, 69-67, in Bender Arena. It was American's first win over a nationally-ranked team in 10 years.
Fall, 1997 - The men's soccer team finishes 17-4-4 and makes to the NCAA Quarterfinals. The team went undefeated at Reeves Field (9-0-3) and extended its home undefeated streak to 17 games. Scott Pearson, AU's second all-time leading scorer (141 points) led the squad, earning Second Team All-America honors.
December 9, 1998 - Women's basketball defeats No. 13 and local rival George Washington, 81-75. It is the second consecutive year the Eagles defeated the Colonials.

April, 2000 - Jeff Jones hired as men's basketball coach, becoming the 17th coach in the school's 74-year history of men's basketball.
Spring, 2000 - American leaves Colonial Athletic Association to become the eighth member of the Patriot League.
November 14, 2000 - Volleyball coach Barry Goldberg, in his 12th season at AU, earns his 300th career win as the Eagles knock off Howard, 3-0.
September 18, 2001 - Women's soccer notches first-ever Patriot League win with a 1-0 conquest of Navy.
November 18, 2001 - Men's soccer defeats Holy Cross in penalty kicks to win its first-ever Patriot League Championship.

November 25, 2001 - Men's soccer defeats Wake Forest, 3-0, to advance to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. The team ends up losing to North Carolina, 1-0, in overtime in the Sweet 16. The Eagles finish the season ranked 14th nationally.
December 22, 2001 - American becomes the first Patriot League school to defeat an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent in men's basketball when the Eagles take down Florida State, 77-72.
March 1, 2002 - Men's basketball player Patrick Doctor named Patriot League Player of the Year.
March 8, 2002 - Men's basketball falls to Holy Cross in the Patriot League Championship Game, 58-54, in Bender Arena before a record crowd of 4,521. The team's 18-12 final record marks an 11-game turnaround from the previous season, one of the nation's largest.
March 12, 2002 - Men's basketball player Patrick Doctor is named Honorable Mention All-America by the Associated Press, becoming the fifth All-American in AU men's basketball history.
June 1, 2002 - Sean O'Brien earns All-America honors in the 1,500m at the NCAA Track Championships. O'Brien became the first American athlete to earn two All-America honors since 1985.
November 10, 2002 - Women's soccer wins its first ever Patriot League Championship after defeating Colgate 2-1 in the finals.

September 5, 2003 - American University Athletics introduces internet radio broadcasts, beginning with men's soccer's matchup with Virginia.
November 8, 2003 - The field hockey team, under the leadership of Steve Jennings, captures its first Patriot League Championship with a 1-0 win over Holy Cross. Melissa Sydner is named Tournament MVP for the Eagles. AU went on to defeat Quinnipiac in the NCAA Play-In Game to move onto its first NCAA Tournament.
November 14, 2003 - Senior Karla Kucerkova breaks the AU all-time career kills record in a 3-0 win over Navy. The previous record was held by Natasha Sylvain at 1,660. Kucerkova finishes her career with 1,765 kills, also breaking the Patriot League record. Kucerkova was twice named the CoSIDA Volleyball Academic Player of the Year, as well as earning Honorable Mention All-America status in 2003.
November 23, 2003 - Volleyball downs Bucknell, 3-0, for its third consecutive Patriot League Championship and ensuing NCAA Tournament berth.

May 6, 2004 - American University hires Melissa McFerrin, a former Women's National Basketball Association general manager and an assistant coach on the 2003-04 University of Minnesota women's basketball Final Four team, as its head women's basketball coach. McFerrin becomes the ninth coach in the 39-year history of the program.
August, 2004 - American University Athletics signs with College Sports Television as its website provider, launching the revamped AUeagles.com.
September 15, 2004 - Former volleyball player Karla Kucerkova named 2004 NCAA Woman of the Year for the District of Columbia.
November 13, 2004 - The field hockey team defeats Iowa, 2-1, in the NCAA Tournament to earn its first ever Elite 8 berth.
November 20, 2004 - Volleyball wins its fourth consecutive Patriot League title with a 3-0 win over Army. The Eagles at this point have won 64 straight Patriot League matches and have not lost in league play since joining the PL in 2001.
December 16, 2004 - Volleyball student-athlete Cutrina Biddulph named AVCA Honorable Mention All-America.
March 17, 2005 - Senior wrestler Daniel Waters became the Eagles' first NCAA All-American after securing a match for seventh place in the final day of the 75th NCAA Championships.
August 30, 2005 - Barry Goldberg made school athletic history with his 400th win as AU defeated Loyola, 3-0 in Bender Arena. The 17-year veteran reached a milestone which only 36 other active Division I coaches had surpassed.
October 8, 2005 - The American University volleyball team ended its four-plus year unbeaten streak of 70 consecutive Patriot League matches with a 3-0 loss to Army at West Point. The Eagles had previously not lost a single match in PL play or been pushed to a fifth game since joining the league in 2001.
November 6, 2005 - A 4-2 victory over Holy Cross in the Patriot League Championship Game gives the field hockey team its third consecutive conference crown. The Eagles finished the season with a program-best 20-2 overall record, reaching the NCAA Tournament Elite 8 for the second straight year.
November 19, 2005 - Down 2-1 in games and eight points away from elimination, the American University women's volleyball team went on a 30-8 run to take the fourth game and build an insurmountable lead in the fifth as they won their fifth straight Patriot League Championship and earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
December 14, 2005 - 2004 volleyball alumnae Natalie Hand named Marshall Scholar, the first female in AU history to earn the award.
March 18, 2006 - Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov took third place at 165 and Josh Glenn placed fourth at 184 at the 2006 NCAA Wrestling Championships, capping the finest year in American University wrestling program history. The pair's All-American honors and the team's 17th place finish are the program's bests in school history at the NCAA Championships.
August, 2006 - American University Athletics once again revamps its website, becoming a premium partner with CSTV. As part of the new AUeagles.com, the site adds streaming video broadcasts to its already existing lineup of internet radio broadcasts.
August 25, 2006 - Volleyball student-athletes Ann and Claire Recht begin play for AU. The identical twins bring recognition to American Athletics as the world's tallest female twins, as certified by the Guinness Book of World Records, at 6'7". The twins are featured in numerous media outlets, including NBC's "Today Show," CBS' "The Early Show," and the Washington Post.
October 28, 2006 - The men's cross country team becomes the first Patriot League school to win five consecutive league titles. The team goes on to finish second at regionals and make its school-record third straight trip to the NCAA Championships.
November 18, 2006 - Volleyball defeats Bucknell, 3-0, to capture its sixth straight Patriot League Tournament and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
December 13, 2006 - Rubena Sukaj named AVCA Honorable Mention All-America, the third All-American in the history of AU's volleyball program.
January 20, 2007 - Men's basketball hosts Holy Cross in annual "Phil Bender" game, setting a Bender Arena record with 4,775 fans in the arena.
February 28, 2007 - Men's basketball player Andre Ingram finished with a game-high 16 points in a 59-44 win over Colgate in the Patriot League Quarterfinals, moving into fifth place in AU's all-time record book with 1,635 career points. Ingram's career ended in his next game, a loss to Holy Cross in the PL semis, where he had a game-high 20 points to finish his AU career with 1,655 total points.
March 17, 2007 - Wrestler Josh Glenn wins the 197-pound title at the NCAA Championship Tournament, becoming the school's second-ever national champion and first national titleholder in since moving to Division I in 1966. Glenn is AU wrestling's first two-time All-American, having finished fourth in the 184-pound weight class at NCAAs in 2006. The Eagles ended the tournament with 33 points, which put them in 17th place, a tie for a school-best.
November 3, 2007 - Field hockey wins its fifth straight Patriot League crown after a 3-1 victory over Lafayette. The Eagles have not lost a game against a conference school in five seasons.
November 17, 2007 - AU women's volleyball captures its seventh straight Patriot League title with a 3-0 win over Colgate.
December 17, 2007 - Men's basketball defeats ACC power Maryland, 67-59, at the Comcast Center in College Park. This is the Eagles' first win over Maryland in 14 meetings over an 80-year span.
March 1, 2008 - Women's basketball claims its first ever Patriot League regular season championship with a thrilling 60-57 overtime victory over Lafayette. Stephanie N'Garsanet leads the Eagles with 17 points in the victory.
March 14, 2008 - Men's basketball beats Colgate 52-46 for its first ever Patriot League Championship, which earns the Eagles a spot in the "Big Dance" for the first time in school history. A jam-packed 3,044 fans pack Bender Arena to witness history. The game is also contested in front of national audience on ESPN2.
March 19, 2008 - AU's women's basketball team faces Villanova in the first round of the WNIT. This is the Eagles' first postseason appearance since 1973. AU drops a heartbreaking 53-52 decision to the Big East squad.
March 21, 2008 - Men's basketball squares off against Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Birmingham, Ala. The Eagles put on a great showing in the school's first ever NCAA Tourney appearance, but come up on the short end of a 72-57 decision.
May 8, 2008 - AU wrestling named "Champions of the Classroom" by the NWCA for the highest team GPA in the country. American and Stanford were the only two wrestling programs in the country to rank in the top 10 academically and place in the top 25 at the NCAA Championships.
August 10, 2008 - Field hockey coach Steve Jennings serves as an assistant coach on the U.S. Olympic Women's Field Hockey Team. The team plays its first game in Beijing, earning a 2-2 draw with Argentina.
September 20, 2008 - Women's volleyball senior Rubena Sukaj sets the school record for career kills. Sukaj graduated as the Patriot League record-holder in kills, as well as the school and conference career leader in aces.
November 8, 2008 - AU field hockey captures its sixth straight Patriot League Championship with a 5-2 win over Bucknell. The Eagles have won 43 consecutive games against Patriot League opponents.
November 18, 2008 - Before men's basketball's opening game of the season versus St. Francis (Pa.), the 2008 Patriot League Championship banner is unveiled at Bender Arena. The Eagles defeated St. Francis 67-46.
November 22, 2008 - Women's volleyball captures its eighth straight Patriot League crown with a 3-1 victory over Colgate at Bender Arena.
February 18, 2009 - Men's Basketball Coach Jeff Jones becomes AU's all-time winningest coach, earning his 143rd career victory with a 58-36 win at Army.
February 21, 2009 - Sophomore swimmer Dorothy Isaacs sets three school records at the Patriot League Championships (50m free, 100 m free and 100m breast). Her 100m breast time set a new Patriot League record.
March 13, 2009 - Men's basketball defeats Holy Cross 73-57 at a sold-out Bender Arena to claim its second consecutive Patriot League Championship. Senior Garrison Carr leads the Eagles with 24 points on nine-of-12 shooting from the floor, including six-of-eight from three-point range. Senior Brian Gilmore chips in 18 points, while Patriot League Player of the Year Derrick Mercer has 13 points and five assists.
March 19, 2009 - Men's basketball falls 80-67 to Villanova in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, which is played in front of 18,322 spectators at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Pa. AU held a 10-point halftime lead thanks to the hot shooting of Garrison Carr, although Villanova's size and depth is too much for the Eagles down the stretch. Villanova would go on to to make an appearance in the NCAA Final Four.
March 20, 2009 - AU's women's basketball teams makes its second consecutive postseason appearance for the first time in school history. The Eagles face James Madison in the first round of the WNIT, and come up on the short end of a 61-59 decision.
June 5, 2009 - For the second consecutive season, the wrestling team is named the NWCA's "Champions of the Classroom" for the highest GPA in the nation. Harvard, Stanford, Duke and Davidson finished two through five in the rankings.
July 8, 2009 - Men's swimming and diving attains the highest team GPA in the country with a 3.54 mark in the spring semester, which was nearly a tenth of a point ahead of the country's second-place finisher. Lafayette (3.45), Dartmouth (3.43), Ohio State (3.37) placed two through four in the rankings. The women's team places 14th with a 3.44 GPA.
August 29, 2009 - The American University volleyball team sets a new Washington, D.C., collegiate volleyball attendance record as 1,813 fans packed Bender Arena in the team's third annual Bender Blue Out, which was contested against Georgetown.
September 9, 2009 - The Department of Athletics re-launches a new and improved AUeagles.com. In partnership with PrestoSports, the new Web site provides enhanced pages, features and videos, transforming the way Eagles' fans follow their favorite student-athletes and teams.
September 12, 2009 - Volleyball Coach Barry Goldberg wins his 500th career game with a 3-1 victory over NJIT. He is the 25th active coach and 43rd all-time to reach the 500-win milestone.
November 7, 2009 - The field hockey team captures its seventh straight Patriot League Championship with a 2-0 victory over Lafayette. The Eagles would go on to defeat Lock Haven in the NCAA Play-In Game before falling to top-seeded Maryland in the NCAA Tournament.

March 2, 2010 - Junior women’s basketball player Michelle Kirk is the first student-athlete in program history to be named Patriot League Player of the Year. Kirk averaged a league-best 17.7 points per game and scored a school-record 565 points.
March 7, 2010 - Wrestling senior Mike Cannon wins 184-pound title at the 106th EIWA Championships. American finished in fifth place.
March 17, 2010 - The women's basketball team earns its program-record third straight postseason appearance, falling to Old Dominion in the WNIT. The Eagles finish the campaign with a 22-10 record, the second-most single-season wins in school history. This includes an all-time best 13-1 conference record, which gave AU a share of the Patriot League Regular Season Championship.
March 19, 2010 - American wrestling finishes in 14th place at the NCAA Championships in Omaha, Neb., marking the program’s best-ever finish. The Eagles also crowned a program record three All-American's in seniors Mike Cannon and Kyle Borshoff and junior Steve Fittery.

November 24 - December 13, 2013 - Volleyball wins 11th Patriot League Championship with a 3-0 sweep over Colgate at Bender Arena. American posts first NCAA Tournament win over Georgia, 3-0, in the First Round. The team then added a win over Duke 3-0 to advance to the NCAA Sweet 16. The season came to an end with a 3-1 loss to No. 1 Texas in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

November 18, 2014 - Monika Smidova claims three major postseason awards to her already illustrious career at American. Smidova is named the Patriot League Player of the Year, Setter of the Year and Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Smidova was selected to the Capital One Academic All-America Division I volleyball team in late December.
November 23, 2014 - Volleyball captures Patriot League Championship with 3-0 win over Lehigh. The Eagles drew Dayton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and fell 3-1.
December 31, 2014 - David Terao is named Outstanding Wrestler after going 4-0 at the inaugural Aloha Open held in his hometown of Honolulu, Hawaii.
February 26, 2015 - Women's basketball senior Jen Dumiak is named to the Capital One Academic All-America Division I women's basketball team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). She is the third women's basketball player to receive this honor. Later in the season, Dumiak is named the Corvias Patriot League Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the PL Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

June 26, 2017 – American University Athletics signs multi-year agreement with Baltimore-based Under Armour to be the official outfitter for all 16 varsity sports.
July 18, 2017 – Adding to her resume as one of AU’s most decorated student-athletes, field hockey’s Natalie Konerth is selected as the Corvias Patriot League Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She is the third AU student-athlete to earn the distinction since American joined the PL in 2001. A two-time Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for field hockey, Konerth graduated from AU in December 2016 with a 4.00 GPA in applied mathematics. Among the many accolades garnered by Konerth in her final year as an Eagle were a CoSIDA Academic At-Large Third Team selection and her second consecutive CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition.
August 3, 2017 – Sean Graham is hired as the head coach of American’s cross country and track and field program, returning to D.C. after previously serving as an assistant from 2009-11.
August 11, 2017 – Men’s basketball embarks on a 10-day, three-game tour of Australia, taking on strong competition in Australia’s premier professional basketball league. In addition to game experience, the Eagles went sightseeing at the Great Barrier Reef and the Kuranda Village Rainforest.
September 18, 2017 – Volleyball hosts exhibition with professional team from Zhejiang, China, a team that has produced a number of players for the Chinese National Team.
October 7, 2017 – Aleksandra Kazala becomes one of 13 volleyball players to reach the 1,000-kill milestone in a three-set win over Lafayette.
October 26, 2017 – Head wrestling coach Teague Moore is selected as the head coach for the U.S. Men's Freestyle Team that will compete in late November at the 2017 Under-23 World Championships in Poland.
October 31, 2017 – Field hockey’s Rafaela Rubas is named as the Patriot League Offensive Player and Noor Coenen earns PL Rookie of the Year.
November 1, 2017 – Maura Jacobs becomes the fourth consecutive American University field hockey player to be selected as the Corvias Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She closed the regular season with a league-leading 1.56 goals against average and totaled 46 saves for a .639 save percentage. Jacobs is studying public relations and strategic communication and holds a 3.98 cumulative grade point average (GPA).
November 4, 2017 – Volleyball’s Kennedy Etheridge surpasses 2,000 career assists in win over Lehigh.
November 14, 2017 – Volleyball’s Aleksandra Kazala is named the Patriot League Player of the Year for a second straight season, joining Karla Kucerkova, Rubena Sukaj and Monica Smidova as Eagles who have won the award multiple times. Kristen Largay is named PL Libero of the Year and set a single-match record with 40 digs against Navy (9/26).
November 19, 2017 – The American volleyball team wins its 15th Patriot League title in 17 years with a sweep over Navy in Bender Arena. AU improves to 30-0 in PL tournament matches inside Bender Arena and have won five straight PL titles. The win gives the Eagles 18 straight wins heading into a first-round NCAA matchup with 13th-seeded BYU. AU would fall in three sets to the Cougars in Provo, Utah.
December 2, 2017 – Josh Terao tops three ranked opponents on his way to a runner-up finish at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. Jeric Kasunic finishes third, while Michael Sprague also gets on the podium with an eighth-place finish. AU finishes in a program-best 11th place out of 46 teams at the tournament widely considered the toughest in the country outside of the NCAA championships.
December 3, 2017 – Alex Feys of the women’s swim team sets meet record at the ECAC Winter Championships by going 2:03.04 to win the 200-yard butterfly.
December 20, 2017 – Women’s basketball closes out the non-conference slate with a 75-66 upset over Big Ten foe, Penn State. It’s the second time AU has beaten a Big Ten team with the first coming against Maryland on December 30, 1986.
January 20, 2018 – In a halftime ceremony, men’s basketball honors the 10-year anniversary of the first Patriot League championship team in program history. The 2007-08 team also earned the program’s first appearance in the Division I NCAA tournament.
February 3, 2018 – Head women’s basketball coach Megan Gebbia is inducted into her hometown Frederick County Sports Hall of Fame.
February 14, 2018 – Emily Kinneston reaches 1,000 career points as the women’s basketball team tops Boston University, 61-54, on the road. She is the 18th player in program history to reach the milestone.
February 17, 2018 – The women’s basketball team sets a new program record with 16 straight wins thanks to a 74-66 victory over Lafayette on Senior Day. The Eagles would stretch that mark to 17 before falling to Bucknell.
February 18, 2018 – Briana Belo wins the women’s indoor 800-meter run conference championship with a time of 2:12.12.
February 21, 2018 – With a 72-57 win over Holy Cross, the women’s basketball clinches the program’s sixth regular-season title. The Eagles also finished the regular-season home slate undefeated (13-0) for the first time since the 1970s.
February 28, 2018 – Lacrosse’s Erica Skowron sets single-game school records with 11 points and six assists in 19-8 victory over Howard.
March 2, 2018 – Megan Gebbia is named Patriot League Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year for the second time in her career, while Emily Kinneston is named Patriot League Women’s Basketball Player of the Year. Gebbia is the second AU women’s basketball coach to earn coach of the year twice and Kinneston is the fourth player in program history to be player of the year
March 4, 2018 – Josh Terao breaks the AU wrestling record for career technical falls in a 16-0 win over Jonathan Gomez of Princeton. Terao now has 14 technical falls, surpassing the record previously held by Steve Fittery (2009-11). He would end his career with 22 technical falls the following season.
March 6, 2018 – Four AU wrestlers (Gage Curry, Josh Terao, Michael Sprague, Brett Dempsey) earn at-large bids to the NCAA tournament and join Jeric Kasunic, who qualified with a fourth-place finish at the EIWA Championships. The five wrestlers heading to NCAAs are the most for AU since five went in 2012. Kasunic goes 1-2 at nationals and finishes 35-7 for the year, the third-most victories in a season. He also surpassed the 100-win plateau at EIWAs, becoming the 8th wrestler in program history to do so.
March 6, 2018 – Emily Kinneston becomes the second consecutive women’s basketball player to be voted the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She joins the elite group of four AU women's basketball players who have been selected for the prestigious award since American joined the league in 2000 - Crisler, Jen Dumiak (2015), Alexis Dobbs (2012, 2013, 2014) and Liz Hayes (2007, 2008).
March 11, 2018 - The top-seeded American University women's basketball team makes history once again, defeating No. 3-seed Navy, 58-49, in Bender Arena to win the program's second Patriot League title and a berth into the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles set or tied several school records during the 2018 season: Single-Season Victories (26), Single-Season Conference Victories (16, tied), Single-Season Conference Winning Pct. (.889, 16-2, tied), and Single-Season FG Attempts (1,861). In the NCAA tournament, AU fell to No. 3 seeded UCLA, 71-60, in Pauley Pavilion.
April 6, 2018 – Briana Belo breaks her own school record in the women’s 800-meter run, leading the 69-woman field at the Colonial Relays with a final time of 2:07.52.
April 11, 2018 – Andre Ingram, Class of 2007, shines in a dream debut for the Los Angeles Lakers, scoring 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. He became the oldest American-born rookie in the NBA since at least 1964. His performance garnered significant media attention from outlets including the New York Times, Washington Post, and TNT.
April 20, 2018 – Four AU wrestlers are named NWCA Academic All-Americans (Brett Dempsey, Jeric Kasunic, Michael Sprague, Josh Terao). Sprague and Terao are earning the national honor for the second straight season, becoming the 10th and 11th Eagles to win the honor at least twice. The Eagles earned a 3.44 GPA, marking the 12th time in the past 13 seasons AU has finished among the top 10 in the nation as they finished fourth in the country.
April 28, 2018 – Sophomore lacrosse player Erica Skowron breaks program record for single-season assists with 25.
May 7, 2018 - Emily Kinneston (women’s basketball) and Jeric Kasunic (wrestling) earn the Outstanding Senior Athlete awards. Brett Dempsey won the Barbara J. Reimann Scholarship.
May 17, 2018 – Four AU teams earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA as women's cross country, women's track, women's basketball and women's swimming and diving were among the top 10 percent among their sport nationally in the most recent Academic Progress Rate metric.
May 24, 2018 - For the first time since 2013, the American University track & field team will have two qualifiers into the NCAA Championships East Preliminary Round, as senior Brianna Belo (800m) and junior Matthew Rainey (1500m) both advanced into the first round of the national championship. Belo once again breaks her own school record in the 800-meter run.
Summer, 2018 – Jacobs Complex undergoes renovations, including an upgrade to the existing turf and a new Daktronics video board featuring an LED video display for in-game graphics content.
July 20, 2018 – Jenna Petrucelli is announced as the new head lacrosse coach. She is the eighth head coach in program history.
August 22, 2018 – Emily Kinneston (women’s basketball) is selected as the Patriot League's sole nominee for the 2018 NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Kinneston is one of 154 nominees nationwide, including 58 from Division I, to advance to the second round of the selection process.
August 26, 2018 – 2,837 fans attend the “Bender Blue Out” as AU volleyball drops a match to No. 1 Stanford, marking the largest crowd to see a home match for the Eagles. The crowd was the eighth in AU history to reach 2,000 or more.
August 31, 2018 – AU field hockey claims a convincing road victory, 5-2, over No. 17 James Madison.
September 13, 2018 – Teague Moore returns to the international wrestling scene, as USA Wrestling announces his appointment as head coach of the U.S. Men’s Freestyle Junior World Team competing in Slovakia.
September 29, 2018 – Head field hockey coach Steve Jennings wins his 250th career game in a decisive 9-1 victory over Lehigh. He becomes the 14th active Division I field hockey coach (27th all-time) to reach the milestone.
October 1, 2018 - Head men's basketball coach Mike Brennan announces that Yilret "YY" Yiljep is medically cleared to resume all athletic activities and will compete for the Eagles in the 2018-19 season. The NCAA and Patriot League approve a waiver request granting him additional seasons of eligibility as a graduate student at AU. Yiljep has been part of the AU men's basketball program since the 2013-14 season when he took the court in 13 games as a freshman. His season and subsequent undergraduate career was cut short due to a heart condition.
October 29, 2018 – Yari Bradfield becomes the first AU women’s soccer player to be named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year after leading the league in goals (13) and points (28).
October 31, 2018 – Maura Jacobs is chosen for her second consecutive Patriot League Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor. The Eagles have now earned the award for five consecutive years and nine total since joining the Patriot League in 2001. Jacobs was also named the PL Goalkeeper of the Year, joining Rafaela Rubas as PL major award winners. Rubas earned her second consecutive PL Offensive Player of the Year award.
November 9, 2018 – Sa’eed Nelson eclipses 1,000 career points in a 78-75 overtime road win over George Mason. Yilret Yiljep also returns to the lineup for the first since Jan. 8, 2014.
November 13, 2018 – Megan Gebbia signs a five-year contract extension to be the head women’s basketball coach through the 2023-24 season.
November 13, 2018 - Aleksandra Kazala is selected for the third straight season as the Patriot League Women’s Volleyball Player of the Year. Kazala becomes only the third player in PL history and the third Eagle to win the award three times. Karla Kucerkova (2001, 2002, 2003) and Rubena Sukaj (2006, 2007, 2008) are the other two.
November 17, 2018 – The quartet of Abby Longstaff, Eleanor Felton, Kyra Manson and Alex Brosvik post their second school record in three nights on Saturday when they earn a second-place finish in the women's 400-yard freestyle relay in the Patriot Invitational swimming and diving meet. They went 3:28.17 in the relay on Saturday, cutting more than a second off the previous school record. The same foursome set the 200 free relay school record on Thursday.
November 19, 2018 – Cecily Carl becomes the 19th player in women’s basketball history to surpass the 1,000-point milestone. With this, Carl joins elite company as one of only three players to hit 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 100 blocks in her career. Only Liz Leer (2007-11) and Kirsten Keller (1991-95) have done so.
December 4, 2018 - The accolades continue to roll in for American University field hockey senior Rafaela Rubas, as she was named to the NFHCA All-America Third Team. Rubas is the 14th player in program history to earn All-American status and the first since Grace Wilson in 2013.
December 11, 2018 – Director of Athletics and Recreation Dr. Billy Walker is added to the President’s Cabinet at American University. The president's cabinet is composed of the senior university administrators who serve as the university's officers and who report directly to the president.
December 21, 2018 – Zach Samol is announced as the 16th head men’s soccer coach in the 60-year history of the program.

January 17, 2019 – Fiona Caulfield (women’s swimming and diving) is honored as one of five recipients of the 2018-19 NCAA Student-Athlete Sportsmanship Awards. The awards recognize the athletes and administrators who exemplify sportsmanship, a core principle of the NCAA. Caulfield went to the aid of an injured teammate at the 2018 Patriot League Championships instead of mentally preparing for her next dive. Her sacrifice left her only a few minutes to prepare, and she narrowly missed her chance for a podium spot at the final collegiate meet of her career.
January 22, 2019 – For the 47th consecutive semester, both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are honored as Scholar All-America Teams. American's women combined for a 3.65 GPA, with the men posting a 3.26 in the fall 2018 semester.
February 2, 2019 – Cecily Carl sets a new women’s basketball program record with 37 points in a 71-66 win over Colgate. She went 10-of-20 from the field, 4-of-9 from three-point range, and 13-of-14 from the free throw line. With the effort, she surpasses Kirsten Keller's 36 points on Dec. 8, 1993.
February 14, 2019 - Academic recognitions continue to roll in for the American University cross country program, as both the men and women were selected as All-Academic Teams. To be eligible for an All-Academic award, a team must have started at least five runners at an NCAA Division I Regional cross country meet and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. February 22, 2019 - Senior Scott Callander breaks his own school record in the men's 100-yard butterfly on Friday, finishing sixth in the championship final at the 2019 Patriot League Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Bucknell.
February 27, 2019 - Lily Koenig goes 56.20 in the women's 100-yard backstroke to set a new Frailey Pool record as the AU swimming and diving teams end their season in the annual Eagle Invitational. Koenig's mark smashed the previous record of 57.71, set by AU's Paris Wood in Oct. 2015.
March 6, 2019 – Women’s basketball earns a share of the Patriot League regular-season title, but are seeded No. 2 after being swept by co-champ Bucknell.
March 8, 2019 – Cecily Carl becomes the fifth player in program history to be selected as the Patriot League Women’s Basketball Player of the Year.
March 9, 2019 – Josh Terao reaches the EIWA finals for the second time and finishes as runner-up. He led a group of four AU wrestlers who earned berths to the NCAA Championships (Gage Curry, Michael Sprague, Terao and Tanner Harvey). Terao becomes the 7th Eagle to qualify for NCAAs three times. As a team, the Eagles scored 75.5 points at the conference meet, which is the most for the program in the last seven seasons.
March 12, 2019 – For the seventh time in eight years, an American University women's basketball player has been selected as the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as senior Cecily Carl was awarded the honor less than a week after earning Patriot League Player of the Year.
March 17, 2019 – Women’s basketball falls in a hard-fought game to Bucknell in the Patriot League championship, 66-54. American qualifies for the WNIT and travel to the historic Palestra on the campus of Penn. It is the Eagles’ 7th appearance in the WNIT.
March 22, 2019 – Josh Terao finishes his AU career in his third appearance at the NCAA Championships, winning a match to finish his career with 103 wins. He is the 9th wrestler in program history to reach 100 wins and ends his career in 6th place on the all-time wins list.
April 26, 2019 – Five American University student-athletes are honored with 2019 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Awards by "Diverse: Issues in Higher Education" magazine. Sam Fromkin, Arianna Lopez, Gabriela Maldonado, Justin Perez and Matthew Rainey earned recognition from the magazine.
April 28, 2019 - Aleksandra Kazala (volleyball) and Josh Terao (wrestling) earn Outstanding Female and Male Senior Athlete Awards. Women's soccer player Audrey Denkler is the recipient of the Barbara J. Reimann Postgraduate Scholarship.
April 29, 2019 – Emma Vinall finishes lacrosse season with program-record 65 points and is named Second Team All-Patriot League.
April 30, 2019 – Four AU wrestlers (Josh Terao, Kizhan Clarke, Michael Sprague, Jack Mutchnik) are named NWCA Scholar All-Americans and the team finishes second in the NCAA for team GPA (3.56). The 3.56 GPA is the best posted at AU since the academic performance started to be tracked in 2006 (3.48, 2011).
May 1, 2019 - Four teams at American University earn Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA based on their Academic Progress Rate results. Men's soccer, women's cross country, women's track and field, and women's swimming & diving each earned a perfect 1,000 score in the APR metric. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I teams. Public Recognition Awards are given to the top 10 percent of teams in each sport in terms of APR.
May 4, 2019 - American University track & field senior Adriana Hooks highlighted the Patriot League Championship meet for the Eagles squad with two podium finishes, including the program's first-ever title in the women's 10,000-meter run.
May 13, 2019 – A group of 17 student-athletes, plus three staff members, head to to the small rural community of Tercera Linea, Paraguay, from May 13-22 to assist community members in the construction of a multipurpose sports court. The trip is organized by the Student-Athlete Support Program.
May 24, 2019 - Senior Liam Purdy closes his American University track & field career in style on Friday, earning the highest finish ever for an AU runner at the NCAA Championships East Preliminary Round with an 18th-place finish in the 800-meter run.
June 11, 2019 – Meg Gebbia extends her contract another season, keeping her under contact with AU through 2025.
June 11, 2019 – Two AU field hockey players are chosen to compete in the 2019 Young Women's National Championship (YWNC) as rising sophomore Josie Formica and Natalie Konerth ('17) were among the 144 elite collegiate and post-collegiate athletes selected for the prestigious tournament.
June 25, 2019 - The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America recognizes American University's men's and women's squads as Scholar All-America Teams for the Spring 2019 semester. The honor marked the 49th consecutive semester that both the men's and women's teams at AU have earned Scholar All-America Team status. The men's team earned a 3.28 for the semester, while the women were at 3.58.
August 6, 2019 - 2019 American University field hockey graduate Rafaela Rubas is selected as one of the two Patriot League nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
August 22, 2019 – Mike Brennan signs a contract extension to remain the head men’s basketball coach through the 2021-22 season.
September 12, 2019 – Karen Angell joins AU Athletics as Assistant AD for Communications and Digital Media.
September, 2019 – AU receives two generous gifts in support of a new Center for Athletic Performance to enhance the student-athlete experience. AU Board of Trustees member Jack Cassell, and his wife, Denise, gave $3 million, and fellow Board of Trustees member, Alan Meltzer, and his wife, Amy, gave $5 million. The Meltzers also gave $2 million to create the Alan L. Meltzer and Amy Meltzer Fellowship for CIS (Center for Israel Studies).
October 16, 2019 - AU ranks in the top 25 of all Division I athletic departments in the latest NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) data release. The NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) is designed to reflect the proportion of student-athletes on any given team who earn a college degree within a six-year window of their initial enrollment.
November 1, 2019 - Senior Kristen Largay becomes the new all-time leader in career digs for American University volleyball. She would go on to finish her career with 2,012 digs, which also is first in Patriot League history.
November 2, 2019 – Field hockey holds off Lafayette to win its first regular-season PL title since 2013. The Eagles also finish conference play unbeaten at 6-0.
November 5, 2019 – Junior Noor Coenen is chosen as the Patriot League Field Hockey Player of the Year. It’s the third straight season an AU player has brought the award back to Tenleytown.
November 10, 2019 – Field hockey overcomes an early deficit to beat Lafayette, 3-2, and win the program’s 11th Patriot League championship. Noor Coenen is named Tournament MVP after tying a tournament record with four goals and nine points. AU would travel to take on Fairfield in an NCAA Opening Round game, falling in a tight contest, 3-1.
November 12, 2019 – Sa’eed Nelson hits a short jumper as time expires to top A-10 opponent, and city rival, George Wasington. The play reaches No. 2 on ESPN’s SportsCenter Top 10, the first of three AU men’s basketball plays to reach the countdown during the 2019-20 season (Stacy Beckton Jr. dunk against Lehigh in January, Connor Nelson buzzer-beater against Bucknell in January)
November 18, 2019 – Women’s basketball tops High Point, 56-48, on the team’s first Pride Night. The game celebrated Pride and inclusivity in the extended AU community, as the campus continues its work to develop a sense of belonging for all.
November 21, 2019 – Volleyball brings home three major conference awards. Olivia Wassner is named the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Setter of the Year, while Zynep Uzen is recognized as the PL Rookie of the Year.
November 24, 2019 – For the 16th time in 19 years, volleyball wins the Patriot League title and qualifies for the NCAA tournament. AU picked up a four-set victory over Army for its 17th straight win. The Eagles would travel to State College, Pa., to take on CAA champ Towson in the first round, falling in a five-set heartbreaker to the Tigers.
December 7, 2019 – Kizhan Clarke (wrestling) opens his season by winning four straight tournaments and racing out to a 17-0 record. He would be ranked as high as No. 7 during the 2019-20 season.
December 10, 2019 – Noor Coenen (field hockey) becomes the 15th player in program history to be named an All-American as she was named to the Second Team by the NFHCA.
December 29, 2019 – Marsha Harper is named the seventh head coach in AU women’s soccer history.
December 30, 2019 – Kizhan Clarke finishes fifth at the prestigious Midlands Championships, while Sal Profaci finishes in eighth place.

2020s

January 31, 2020 - Wrestling hosts first “Wrestle Like A Girl Night” in collaboration with Sally Roberts and the non-profit organization, Wrestle Like A Girl.
February 6, 2020 - AU Athletics welcomes His Excellency and the Embassy of Bahrain for Bahrain Sport Day. AU student-athletes played a friendly game of volleyball against the visitors from the Bahrain Embassy before enjoying a lunch spread featuring dishes from Bahrain.
February 15, 2020 - Sa'eed Nelson becomes the third American men's basketball player to reach 2,000 career points, and the eighth in Patriot League history. Nelson is the only active NCAA D-I men's basketball player with 2,000 points, 500 rebounds, and 500 assists.
February 19, 2020 - The women's 800 freestyle team breaks a 19-year-old school record by finishing in 7:35.92 at the Patriot League Championships.
February 26, 2020 - Sa'eed Nelson breaks a 39-year-old school record held by Russell “Boo” Bowers and becomes the all-time leading scorer in AU men's basketball history. He would finish his career with 2,116 points, good for third in PL history.
February 29, 2020 - Lacrosse clinches program-best start at 5-0 with 18-12 win over LIU.
March 2, 2020 - Sa'eed Nelson is named Patriot League Player of the Year. He is the third Eagle to win the award and first since Derrick Mercer in 2009.
March 10, 2020 - Casey Harkins (Lacrosse) breaks three school records in 19-9 win over Presbyterian. She set single-game records with 11 assists and 12 points, and set new program record with 34 assists on the season. Emma Vinall sets new record with nine goals in the win, breaking a record held since 1996.
March 12, 2020 - Patriot League cancels all spring practices and competitions. Lacrosse finishes record-breaking season with 7-0 mark.
March 13, 2020 - NCAA Wrestling Championships are cancelled amid COVID-19 pandemic. Four AU wrestlers had qualified (Gage Curry, Sal Profaci, Kizhan Clarke, and Tanner Harvey).
March 31, 2020 - Sa'eed Nelson is tabbed as Lou Henson All-American, which comprises the best mid-major players in NCAA D-I men's basketball.
March 31, 2020 - Emma Vinall earns first All-American honor in AU lacrosse history.
April 15, 2020 - Sa'eed Nelson (men's basketball) and Kristen Largay (volleyball) are named Top Senior Male and Female Student-Athlete.

Dec. 2, 2020 - Fundraising for the future Center for Athletic Performance (CAP) receives an extremely generous boost with the announcement of a $3 million gift from the Bender Foundation, Inc.
Dec. 3, 2020 - Board of Trustees member Stephanie M. Bennett-Smith, Ph.D. gives gifts totaling $1.5 million to the Student-Athlete Support Program. The existing life skills and leadership programming is hereby known as the Stephanie M. Bennett-Smith AU Eagles Life Skills and Leadership Academy.
Jan. 9, 2021 - The first competition for AU Athletics since mid-March, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is women's basketball at Lehigh.
April 13, 2021 - Two-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year Jason Borrelli is named the head wrestling coach.
April 17, 2021 - Men's soccer defeats Lafayette on the road in double overtime, 2-1, for its first Patriot League Championship since 2004. The Eagles had been picked to finish ninth of 10 teams in the PL Preseason Coaches Poll. Junior transfer David Coly is named the PL Tournament MVP. He scored in the last six games of the season and earned All-Region Second Team honors.
April 24, 2021 - Lacrosse All-American Emma Vinall breaks the program records in both career goals and career points.
April 25, 2021 - Freshman Mimi Watts of women's swimming & diving sets three school records at the Patriot League Challenge, winning all three events (50 free, 100 fly and 200 fly) to close out the year.
April 29, 2021 - With a 5-4 edge in penalty kicks after a 3-3 tie, men's soccer advances past Jacksonville in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
May 2, 2021 - The men's soccer season comes to an end with a narrow, 2-1 loss to #1 Clemson in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
June 24, 2021 - Garland Bartlett, formerly an assistant coach for men's and women's swim & dive, is named head coach, becoming the only female head coach of the sport in the Patriot League.
July 22, 2021 - With a cumulative team GPA of 3.80, women's track earns the top spot in Division I in the USTFCCCA for 2020-21.
Nov. 6, 2021 - Under the direction of 23rd year head coach Steve Jennings, the Patriot League Coach of the Year, field hockey wins the Patriot League Championship for the 12th time in program history. The Eagles went a perfect 6-0 in the PL for the 10th time.
Feb. 9, 2021 - Megan Gebbia becomes the all-time winningest coach in women's basketball history with 151 victories after the Eagles beat Bucknell at home, 56-48.
Feb. 17, 2022 - Mimi Watts, a sophomore for women's swim & dive, becomes the first swimmer to medal at the Patriot League Championships since 2013. She ends up with two silvers (50 free, 100 fly) and one bronze (200 fly), setting school records in all three.
March 13, 2022 - For the third time in program history, women's basketball wins the Patriot League Championship with a 65-54 win over Bucknell, and advances to the NCAA Tournament. The Eagles were the second seed but hosted the final after top-seeded Holy Cross was upset in the quarterfinals.
April 24, 2022 - For the first time since 2019, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Student-Athlete Awards are once again held in person.
April 29, 2022 - Lacrosse, tying its program record with nine wins behind a career-tying nine goals from All-American Emma Vinall, beats Boston University to secure a spot in the Patriot League Tournament for the first time since 2013. Vinall finishes her historic career with program records in goals, points and draw controls.
June 7, 2022 - Longtime associate head coach Tiffany Coll is named the 14th head coach in women's basketball history.
Nov. 8, 2022 - With a 3-1 win over Army in double overtime, men's soccer advances to the Patriot League Championship game for a third straight season. The Eagles ultimately fall 1-0 at Navy in the final.
Nov. 23, 2022 - For the first time in 40 years, men's basketball defeats Georgetown. The team later went on to beat George Washington as well, marking the first time in history that AU defeated both programs in the same season.
Feb. 18, 2023 - Junior Mimi Watts of women's swim & dive is named AU's first Patriot League Women's Swimmer of the Meet in 17 years after capturing three conference titles (in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 fly). She set new school records in all three events, as well as in two relays.
March 26, 2023 - After a year-long battle with cancer, 34th-year volleyball coach Barry Goldberg passes away. Goldberg concluded his career as a Hall of Famer, and with a truly remarkable 812 career victories in addition to 18 NCAA Tournament appearances and 16 Patriot League Championships. He was 61.
April 1, 2023 - Duane Simpkins is hired as the 18th head coach in the history of AU men's basketball.
