Fall 2020 Newsletter

Hello AU Eagles Swim & Dive alums, parents, friends, and fans!

Welcome to the Fall 2020 newsletter. Like a lot of things in 2020, this has been a semester unlike any before. While half of the team (those living off-campus) trained at the Frailey Pool this fall from mid-October up until the week of Thanksgiving break, the other half of our team was scattered across the country, training and studying at home. Despite this, we all stayed connected through weekly Zoom meetings presented by alumni of the program and team meetings.

We are so excited to have the entire team on campus in January to train together, compete, and complete the season at the 2021 Patriot League Conference Championships from April 24-26th.

Inside this newsletter you’ll find updates on both new and returning swimmers & divers, as well as a recap of everything the team was up to this past summer and fall. We have also added an “Alumni Spotlight” page to spotlight some of our awesome alumni!

We're also on social media! Please "LIKE" us on Facebook (American University Swimming and Diving).  Follow us on Instagram (@AU_swim_dive) and Twitter (@AU_swimdive) to stay updated on the latest news.

Internships

Whether it was virtual or in person, several of the upperclassmen members of the team were still able to take advantage of all the internship opportunities American University offers!

Seniors

Alex Feys was in the head position for the S6 in her ROTC Battalion this fall. Alex organized all communications and signals during training. She was also recently selected to be the S3 shop head for the spring semester, and will be the head of all training and operations in the Battalion.

Ellie Kight interned with The Mindfulness Center, which specializes in providing integrative treatment services for chronic and acute illnesses. Ellie specifically did literature and current event research, organizing and developing a public health/alternative medicine program to address issues in our society.

Liam Riebling interned at the Manhattan Comedy School in New York, N.Y. He helped promote virtual stand-up comedy shows, organized online events, and ran a public relations strategy program for the school.

Juniors

Suzie Davis interned with Jumpstart DC, which is an early education nonprofit and engages college students with pre-school and kindergarten age children. Suzie worked with other “corp members” to create videos of readings and activities for children in DC to bridge the education and readiness gap before the next school year. Next semester, Suzie will also be internship with Special Olympics International. She will help implement a project funded by the MetLife Foundation to create and deliver backpacks with materials and supplies for families to carry out Youth Athletes programming at home.

Christian Hernandez interned for The Council of Insurance Agents and Brokers and a Marketing Intelligence intern. He did market research on Amazon and Apple and created a market analysis on these two companies and their ways of working into our nation’s healthcare system.

Alumni Corner

With the cancellation of the fall season, so came the postponement of the 25th annual Red/Blue Alumni Meet. Held each fall, the team and coaches look forward to kicking off the new season with this event. The day allows alums to brush the cobwebs off their suits and race against current members on the team. The races and rivalry between the Red and Blue teams are always a blast, but a lot of other memories are made connecting with old teammates, alums, and John Barry’s excellent BBQ skills. Whenever we are finally able to, we will plan for a big 25th year of the meet.

Despite not having our meet this fall, we kept current members on the team and alums connected by hosting an “Alumni Corner” every Wednesday during the semester. This effort was led by Frank Byscov ’01. These sessions gave the team an opportunity to hear and interact with an alum of the program.

A very special thank you to Frank Bsycov ‘01, Melinda Gilbert ‘08, Shelby Legel ‘12, Shannon Scovel ‘16, Olivia Wons ‘16, Caylee Watson ’16 and Shannon Exley ‘17 for taking the time to present for the “Alumni Corner.” It was great hearing about your time at AU and the advice that each of you were able to give the current team.

We have a lot of fun things planned for the spring semester, including ways to keep connecting the team and alums. Once the team is back on campus (and freshmen are drafted to teams), we will be having a Red vs. Blue Challenge. Athletes will be reaching out to alums and asking them questions ranging from their time at the University to what they are doing now! The more conversations the team members have, the more points they win. The team that earns the most points wins!

We also plan on continuing these talks for the spring semester and would love to have more alums get involved! Announcements and Zoom invitations are posted in the “American University Swimming & Diving Alumni” Facebook group at this link- https://www.facebook.com/groups/3023661167744085/about. If you aren’t already a member, please join or email coach Garland Bartlett at gbartlet@american.edu to add you!

Alumni Spotlight

Get to know AU Swim & Dive alum Julie Andreeff Jensen, Team Captain, SPA/BA ’95, WCL/JD ‘02

Julie swam for four years at AU, on a team that won the conference title twice while she was on the team and then served as an assistant coach for four years while getting her law degree at The American University School of Law.

This fall, Julie was hired as the Senior Vice President for External Engagement and Communications for The Washington Football Team, and is one of the few females in the NFL to hold an executive position. One of her responsibilities is to lead for the team’s Women’s Initiative Network, which encourages women’s leadership within the organization.

Previously, she served as Chief Corporate Affairs and Communications Officer at Citadel. She also held various positions on Capitol Hill, working in senior positions on several presidential campaigns during crucial election cycles.

1. What were your best/favorite swim events?

The 200 breaststroke was by far my favorite event. I arrived at American more of a sprinter but by my junior year the 200 breaststroke was my favorite. I loved the strategy and the pacing involved. It became my best event after learning how to pace it properly!

2. Favorite AU swim memory

I am in a unique position because I both swam and coached at AU! So I have so many fond memories but many of my best memories are actually from coaching. My favorite meet as a coach was from my fourth year coaching. We had an incredible men’s team that year and they went undefeated and won the conference championship. After working with that group of swimmers for four years and knowing all of the work they put in to get there - it was incredibly satisfying to see the joy that both the men and the women shared when the men won that year. We all celebrated as one team and I still have the photo of all of us in the pool after we all got thrown in during the celebration! I was a very proud coach that day.

3. What is one thing people may not know about you?

I am from Buffalo and I swam across Lake Erie with a friend for charity. It was his idea and it was crazy. 10 miles. It was really cold!

4. How did your 4 years at AU prepare you for what you are doing today?

My four years (really 8 years!) at AU were an incredible experience and helped make me who I am today. Being a student-athlete forces you to learn how to balance and prioritize. Hard work, discipline and teamwork summarize my time at AU. I made friends for life who are still some of my best friends today. I learned what a team can do if you come together and work really hard. I learned that there is a huge world of interesting and impactful work you can do that can be just as rewarding as being a part of a team. I have used all of these lessons I learned at AU as I’ve built my career which has now led me to the Washington Football Team. I have taken jobs that push me, let me work with amazing people, require a lot of hard work, and inspire me to make a difference. I feel very fortunate to have had such an extraordinary education at AU that opened doors for me by opening my eyes to what was possible.
