Doug Dugan Excellence Award

The American University Department of Athletics and Recreation is honored to establish the Doug Dugan Excellence Award.

This award is named in memory of soccer alumnus and beloved husband, father and friend, Doug Dugan '81, who died on July 18, 2016. Doug's family, former teammates and classmates remember him as a high-quality player, dedicated teammate and fun-loving individual who remained selfless and ever upbeat as he battled a debilitating disease his entire adult life.

The award will be given annually to the AU men's soccer player who embodies the attitudes and attributes of leadership and excellence, characteristics for which Doug is fondly remembered – on and off the pitch.   Awarded by fellow teammates and the coaching staff, the awardee will have shown dedication to the team, determined work ethic and a selfless spirit that lifted his teammates to their optimal level.

This memorial aims to capture Doug's spirit and preserve it as a perpetual example for every Eagles soccer player in the future.

"We are proud to have Doug Dugan's name on this award," says former men's soccer head coach Todd West, "The commitment to his family, teammates and fellow alumni will forever remind us what it means to balance excellence with humility and friendship."
