Student-Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO Dec. 3, 2007

Swimmer Meghan Thiel has been named the American University Student-Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO, Department of Athletics and Recreation officials announced Monday.

Thiel competed in three preliminary events at last week's USA Swimming Championships in Atlanta, Ga. On Thursday, the senior placed 40th in the 500 free with a time of 4:53.39. Friday, Thiel swam in the 200 free where she finished in 77th place in 1:51.70. Thiel's best placement came Saturday in the 1650 free where she finished in 18th place with a time of 16:41.50.

All three of Thiel's times were good enough to place her in the top-10 of the Patriot League record book. Her 200 free time was the fifth fastest in conference history. In the 500 free, Thiel took over fourth place and in the 1650 free the two-time PL Swimmer of the Meet was fast enough for second all-time. Thiel already owns the PL record in both the 500 free (4:48.05) and the 1650 free (16:38.58), as well as second place in the 200 free (1:50.83).
