Student-Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO Nov. 26, 2007

American University women's basketball senior Liz Hayes has been named the American University Student-Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO after averaging 19.7 points per game and five assists per game, AU Athletics officials announced Monday.

Hayes led her team to a 2-1 record this week including two double-digit wins and a narrow loss to No. 16/17 West Virginia. Against Wagner on Monday, Hayes led all scorers with 18 points and was four of seven shooting from behind the arc. Hayes also recorded a game-high five assists, tied her career-high with four steals and was 6-8 at the line. Hayes nearly led the Eagles to an upset of the No. 16/17 team in the country when they fell to West Virginia Friday by only four points. The senior was 10-24 from the field including six three-pointers and tallied a game-high 29 points, narrowly missing her career-high of 30. Hayes dished out a team-high four assists against the Mountaineers, two steals and was three of four from the charity stripe. In the Eagles final game of the week against Brown, Hayes totaled 12 points to help AU to an eleven point victory. She again led both teams in assists with six, added two three pointers and was four of six on the line.

Hayes averaged nearly 20 points (19.67) for the week. The bulk of her points came from three-point land where she hit 12 of 28 shots (42.9%). Hayes also led her team in assists all week averaging five per game and committed just five turnovers for an assist to turnover ratio of 3 to 1. The senior was also a force on the defensive end, tying a career-high with four steals against Wagner and averaging two steals per game. This is Hayes third career weekly award from the conference.

American will be back in action this Saturday, Dec. 1, at home when Western Michigan visits Bender Arena for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
