Student-Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO April 13, 2009

Senior lacrosse student-athlete Kira Sonberg has been named the American University Student-Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO, Department of Athletics officials announced Monday. Sonberg netted a career-high five goals on six total shots in the Eagles' 9-5 win over Davidson on Sunday afternoon.

Sonberg converted two unassisted first half goals versus Davidson to help the Eagles run out to a 4-1 halftime lead. However, the Wildcats rallied to tie the score at 5-5 in the second half before AU took a 6-5 lead on an Amanda Makoid goal with 6:07 to play in the game.

From that point on, Sonberg controlled the action. She scored the game's final three goals to put the final touches on AU's victory. Lauren Schoenberger and Maeve Cook picked up assists on Sonberg's third and fourth goals of the game, while her fifth conversion came unassisted.

The Eagles will be home at Jacobs Field on Wednesday, April 15, when they take on Richmond at 4:00 p.m. This will be the fifth game of a six-game home series to close out the season.

On Saturday, April 18, Sonberg and the five other seniors on AU's roster will be honored before its season-ending game against Holy Cross. Gametime is set for 12:00 p.m. at Jacobs Field.
