Student-Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO March 31, 2008

Senior Brendan Fennell, who won his third event of the spring for the men's track team and set a new school record on Friday, has been named the American University Student-Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO, Department of Athletics and Recreation officials announced Monday.

Fennell won the men's 5000 meter run on Friday at the Adidas Raleigh Relays, held on the campus of North Carolina State University, defeating professional runner Chris Lukezic of the Reebok Track Club and setting a new AU school record in the process. Fennell completed the race in a time of 13:51.67, nearly one second ahead of second place Lukezic who finished in 13:52.60. Fennell's time shattered the previous school record by nearly 11 seconds. The former record, which was also set by Fennell, stood at 14:02.53.

For Fennell, the victory marks his third win of the spring in as many weeks. Fennell first won the men's 3000 meter run at the Coastal Carolina Invitational and then won the men's 1500 meter run at last week's Navy Invitational.

Fennell and the AU men's track team will be out of action this week and will return to the track April 11-12 when the squad splits up between the Bucknell Bison Outdoor games in Lewisburg, Pa., and the Onesty/Abramson Invitational in Charlottesville, Va.
