Student-Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO March 30, 2009

Junior Amanda Makoid has been named the American University Student-Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO, Department of Athletics officials announced Monday. Makoid netted seven goals on 11 shots and added one assist as the Eagles went 1-1 in regular season play this week.

Makoid scored the first two goals of the game on Saturday against Lafayette, putting AU ahead 2-0 just 1:23 into the game. Her one assist of the day came on a feed to Kira Sonberg, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead. Makoid scored her third goal in the half off a free position attempt to take a 7-2 lead after a Lafayette scoring drive. She also picked up two ground balls in the victory, including one near the end of regulation to secure American's win, 12-11.

On Wednesday, Makoid scored four goals as the Eagles fell to George Mason, 18-8. Makoid once again scored back-to-back goals near the end of the first half, including one off a free position attempt, to bring George Mason's lead down to six. Her last two goals of the game came off free position attempts as she scored her four goals on seven shots.

Makoid and the Eagles will be home at Jacobs Field on Wednesday, April 1, when they take on Navy at 3:30 p.m. This will be the first game of a six-game home series to close out the season.
