Student-Athletes of the Week presented by GEICO March 24, 2008

After earning All-America status at the 2008 NCAA Wrestling Championships, senior Josh Glenn and sophomore Mike Cannon have been named the American University Student-Athletes of the Week presented by GEICO, Department of Athletics and Recreation officials announced Monday. Glenn placed fifth at 197 lbs. to win his third-consecutive All-America honor while Cannon placed sixth at 165 lbs. to earn All-America status for his first time.

"I'm so proud of these guys," Head Coach Mark Cody said. "Josh has had an incredible career. It's tough enough to get on the podium once at the NCAA Championships but he's done it three years in a row now for us and has also won a national championship. I just can't say enough about what Josh has done at American and what he will always mean to our program. Mike has come such a long way since his freshman year. He came to American as a one-time state champion in Maryland and know he's on the podium at the NCAA Championships as one of the best wrestlers in the country."

Glenn won his first three matches of the weekend and finished the tournament with a 4-2 record. Glenn's wins included a 2-0 decision, a fall at 1:49, a 10-5 decision and an 11-6 decision. Cannon won his first two matches at the tournament and finished with a 4-3 record. Cannon's victories included a 6-3 decision, a 7-4 decision, a 3-1 sudden victory decision and a 7-6 decision.

Glenn is the only AU wrestler to have ever won multiple All-America honors and has now done so three times. In 2006 he placed fourth at 184 lbs. to earn the distinction and last year he won the 197 lbs. national championship. Cannon, along with Daniel Waters (8th in 2005), Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov (3rd in 2006) and Glenn, is now one of only four wrestlers in AU history to earn one of six All-America honors. He and Glenn also represent the only AU wrestlers to earn the prestigious award as an underclassmen.
