Student-Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO Feb. 9, 2009

Senior Andrew Silber has been named the American University Student-Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO, Department of Athletics officials announced Monday. Silber went 2-0 last weekend at 197 lbs. for the Eagles and earned a 9-4 upset of then No. 9 Cayle Byers in AU's 29-9 victory over George Mason.

Silber began the weekend with a 7-2 decision over Karim Mahmoud in American's 19-17 loss at Rutgers on Saturday. At home against George Mason on Sunday, Silber scored the 9-4 victory to help AU improve to 4-0 in Bender Arena this season. Byers scored early on Silber with a double leg but Silber was able to get back on top with an escape and leg sweep, 3-2. Silber chose to begin the second period down and escaped to move the score to 4-2. Byers scored another takedown to even the score but a quick escape by Silber and takedown gave him back the lead, 7-4. Silber was awarded a stalling point to move the score to 8-4 and held 1:38 of riding time heading into the third period. Byers chose to begin the third neutral but was not able to score on Silber as the senior held on for the victory with riding time, 9-4.

The Eagles will be back in action at home this weekend, hosting the University of Maryland on Saturday, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m. and Bucknell on Sunday, Feb. 15, at 1 p.m. AU will celebrate senior day on Sunday.
