American University field hockey junior Shelly Montgomery has been named the
AU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by GEICO, after recording
an assist and a game-winning goal at the Terrapin Invitational in
College Park, Md. this past weekend.
The Fairfax, Va. native registered the game-winning assist in
the Eagles 3-0 victory over Dartmouth Saturday. Alex McMackin received a pass from
Montgomery right in front of the cage and tipped it in a minute and
10 seconds into the game to give the Eagles an early 1-0
advantage.
On Sunday, Montgomery scored her first goal of the season, the
game-winner in the 92nd minute, to lead the Eagles to a 2-1 victory
over No. 19 Massachusetts as she found the back of the net on an
American penalty corner in the second overtime period. Gina Hofmann tallied the assist to
give the Eagles their second straight win and the upset.
Montgomery and American will return to action this Friday as the
Eagles travel up to East Lansing, Mich., opening the weekend
against Michigan State on Friday, September 14 at 6 p.m.
