American University distance runner John Pope has been named the AU
Student-Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO, Department of
Athletics officials announced Monday.
The sophomore from Carlisle, Pa. paced the men’s track
team at Saturday’s Maryland Invitational, claiming first
place in the 3000 meter run. Pope bested his personal record of
8:49.70 by a full 14 seconds, crossing the finish line with a time
of 8:35.53. Fellow American student-athletes Mark Leininger and
Ryan Williams finished second (8:35.66) and third (8:37.19),
respectively.
The win is Pope’s first at American University. He also
placed fifth in the mile run at the Navy Invitational earlier this
month and sixth in the 3000 meter run at Coastal Carolina last
season.
Pope and the Eagles will return to the track this upcoming
Saturday, January 28 at the George Mason Patriot Games.
