Junior defender Adem Gokturk of the American
University men’s soccer team has been selected as the AU
Student-Athlete of the Week presented by GEICO. The Annandale, Va.,
native was honored on two all-tournament teams over the last week
to pick up the award.
Gokturk was named to the Penn State Classic All-Tournament Team
last Monday following AU’s draw against No. 15 Ohio State and
loss at No. 18 Penn State. Gokturk anchored the defensive unit that
allowed only one goal to the Buckeyes and one full strength score
to the Nittany Lions. Penn State’s second goal came with one
second remaining in regulation once AU had pushed goalkeeper Matt Makowski into the offensive
end.
In this past weekend’s D.C. College Cup, Gokturk was again
selected to the all-tournament team. He registered his
second-career assist in Thursday’s win over George
Washington, which came on Alassane Kane’s game-winning
goal.
Gokturk, who has been on the field for all 290 minutes this
season, will lead the Eagles this weekend, beginning on Friday,
September 9 in their home opener vs. Liberty. AU will then hit the
road at Syracuse on Sunday, September 11.
