Alan and Amy Meltzer Center for Athletic Performance

The Alan and Amy Meltzer Center for Athletic Performance and the attached Sports Center Annex (SCAN) were completed in January, 2026, offering new spaces for student-athletes and the entire AU community to thrive. American University is hosting a Grand Opening Community Celebration event on Friday, Jan. 16 at 5 p.m., followed by AU wrestling against LIU at 7 p.m.

The Meltzer Center, sometimes referred to as the CAP, provides new facilities for many of the department’s Division I athletics programs. The building includes a multi-purpose competition and practice court, a three-mat wrestling training center, hospitality and team meeting spaces, and a production studio for ESPN+ broadcasts. New sports medicine and strength and conditioning rooms provide more resources and opportunities for student-athletes to achieve excellence.

The Sports Center Annex provides resources for student-athletes and the broader student body, including a wellness hub, a shared lounge and kitchenette, classrooms, and a film room. An outdoor terrace overlooks Reeves Field and Greenberg Track, which were also recently renovated. Both centers house new coaches’ offices and locker room spaces.

The spaces reinforce AU Athletics’ emphasis on academics, life-skills, and building community in addition to athletics performance.

The new athletic buildings came about thanks to the support of donors who support the mission of American University Athletics. The generosity of Alan and Amy Meltzer, Jack Cassell, and the Bender family have tremendously helped the vision for a new facility to become a reality. There have been several other donors to the project, and the department continues to work with alumni and friends on continued support for the building.

The Meltzer-Danielson Wrestling Training Center spans over 6,000 square feet, doubling in size compared to the team’s previous wrestling room. The Meltzer Center gym, featuring Barry Goldberg Court, offers space for 750 spectators to watch wrestling and volleyball competitions, with the capability of holding basketball contests as well.
