WASHINGTON, D.C. - The American University lacrosse team challenged #25 Army on Saturday afternoon at the Jacobs Complex, leading through three quarters and falling just short of the upset in Patriot League play.
Caleigh Forti headlined the spirited effort with a season-high 17 saves, while seven different Eagles scored goals to go punch-for-punch with the Black Knights.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Reagan Murdoch's hat trick led the offensive effort for American, going an efficient three-of-four on shots and bringing her team-leading total to 31 on the year. Kellie Linehan, Alyssa Apuzzo, Kristen Hegarty, and Becca Frank each added a pair of goals, while Ashley Smith and Annabelle Jackson put one in apiece.
- The Army attack fired away all afternoon, letting loose 45 shots and putting 33 on target. Two six-goal performances from Brigid Duffy and Allison Reilly led the Black Knights.
- Caleigh Forti was excellent in net for AU, stymieing the Army attack with a season-high seventeen saves. The senior keeper reached 300 career denials with her performance today, and continues to lead the Patriot League with 136 on the season.
- Freshman Peyton Coleman secured three draw controls for the second time this season, and Maddy Spratt added three of her own.
- While Army bested AU 24 to nine in the draw control circle, the Eagles collected 14 ground balls to 11 for the Black Knights to gain crucial possessions.
- AU won the turnover battle 10 to nine, causing all but one against an Army team that averages the least giveaways per game in the Patriot League. One of Juliet Kuenzler's two caused turnovers was a charge, and Jenna Walls drew one as well on Army's first possession of the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two teams were dead locked on the scoreboard at the end of both the first and second quarters. Hegarty, Smith, Frank, and Murdoch traded goals with Gabrielle Mirak, Duffy, and two from Reilly to make the score 4-4 after one. Forti came up big for AU, making five saves to keep her from an early deficit.
- The Eagles found themselves down 8-5 at the 8:03 mark of the second quarter after Reilly and Duffy followed an opening goal from Ryan Remaly, but roared back with four unanswered tallies. Murdoch stopped the bleeding with a blow by and a bounced shot from the right side of the eight-meter, then Apuzzo netted two in a row. She created space with a beautiful spin move just just in front of goal to get her first, then converted a free position try for her second to tie the game 8-8.
- Jackson gave American the lead with 2:27 remaining in the half, but Duffy evened the score at 9-9 less than a minute later. The teams were knotted up at the break.
- The Eagles took their only multi-goal lead of the day just four minutes into the third quarter, using a free position goal from Hegarty and a behind-the-back finish from Frank to make it 11-9. Duffy and Reilly responded with back-to-back goals for Army, but Murdoch added one more goal off a quality feed from Linehan. The third was another big quarter for Forti, making six saves in the frame to help AU grab the 12-11 lead.
- The Black Knights tightened their grip on the game in the fourth quarter, outscoring AU 5-1. Reilly tied the game at 12 just over a minute in, then Remaly took advantage of a two-player-up advantage after Hegarty and Spratt were given cards. Her goal gave the visitors the lead, and they didn't lose it for the rest of the game.
- Linehan had the only goal of the final quarter for the Eagles to make the score 15-13, but another answer from Remaly sealed the victory for Army.
