Lacrosse Ends Season With Loss to Navy

WASHINGTON - The American University lacrosse team dropped their final game of the season to Navy on Thursday afternoon at the Jacobs Complex, 17-5. Caleigh Forti made a season-high 18 saves for the Eagles, but it wasn't enough against a Navy team that fired off 46 shots and scored with 11 different players.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Forti's 18 saves are the second most in a single game in her career, dating back to when she set the program record against Navy last year with 21.
  • Maddy Spratt scored two goals and bagged an assist to lead AU in her final game, while fellow senior Alyssa Apuzzo matched a goal with a helper. Kristen Hegarty and Peyton Coleman rounded out the scoring for the Eagles with a goal apiece.
  • Spratt also won three draw controls to finish her career with 140.
  • Senior Jenna Walls caused two turnovers and collected a ground ball on the defensive end, closing her career with 46 and 55 total. Alyssa Nilles also came off the bench and forced a turnover in her final game.
  • Navy's Alyssa Chung led the offensive onslaught for the Mids, letting eight shots fly and scoring five goals.
  • Alyssa Daley was dominant in the draw control circle, winning a game-high 17 to herself.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Chung got Navy on the board 23 seconds into the game, and the visitors went on to put in five more goals in the quarter. Hegarty tallied one for AU off a quality feed from Apuzzo, driving her shot to the bottom left corner of the cage.
  • Chung, Tori DiCarlo, and Maggie DeFabio added three more goals for Navy in the second quarter. The Eagles ended the the half with back-to-back goals, as Becca Frank found Apuzzo for one, and Spratt converted a free position chance for the other.
  • The second was Forti's most active quarter, making nine saves on 12 shots on frame from the Midshipmen.
  • Navy matched its first quarter effort in the third, scoring another six goals to make the score 15-4. The freshman Coleman scored AU's only goal of the frame, finishing off a dish from Spratt from behind the cage at the 8:10 mark.
  • Spratt put in her second goal of the day in the fourth. Hegarty provided the long pass to her after picking up a ground ball off a turnover in transition, and Spratt beat Emma Richardell to the bottom left corner. The Mids added two more goals, ending the game at 17-5.
The Eagles finish the season at 5-11 overall, and 1-7 in Patriot League play.
